Horror as father and daughter killed

wd2987518-copy.jpgA Black Country schoolgirl and her father have been killed in horror crash while on holiday in Turkey.

Charley Pearce, aged eight, died with her father Jonothon, 38, when then jeep in which they were travelling crashed into a tractor pulling a trailer of bricks.

The family, which runs florist Londonderry Flowers in Londonderry Lane, Smethwick, were in the back of an open top Land Rover when tragedy struck on Monday afternoon. They were in a convoy of four vehicles, having a water pistol fight when, according to eye witnesses, a passing German tourist on a motorcycle threw water which hit the driver of the Pearce family’s car.

Their driver then swerved and crashed into the tractor trailer.

The girl’s eight-year-old cousin is in a critical but stable condition in hospital with head injuries and five other family members, including her mum Joanne, were injured in the crash.

The eight-strong family group, four adults and four children, were on their way back to the First Choice Holiday Village in Sarigerme, Turkey. They were not believed to have been wearing seatbelts.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said the driver of the Jeep was being detained.

My partner and I went on a jeep safari in Turkey in May. There is not a lot of health and safety there I’m afraid, therefore you do not wear a seat belt in these jeeps. There was a lot of throwing water at each other when travelling in convoy with the other jeep. It is good fun but as this only goes to show, these things can end in tragedy. A terrible shame. Jane
