A council has pledged to back a campaign to place the names of a Black Country town’s war dead on stone plinths at the town’s memorial.

Cash is being raised to include names on the structure in Wednesbury.

It is believed to be the only memorial in the country which does not have the names of the fallen inscribed on it and the Wednesbury War Memorial Group is raising cash to have the structure reconfigured so the names can be added.

Sandwell Council chiefs have already had a £3,000 feasibility study carried out and have said they will be doing all their can to support it.

Sandwell Councillor Linda Horton, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “It is right local people who have made the ultimate sacrifice should have their names added to the memorial and the council’s parks and countryside department will put as much money as it can towards the project. A final figure has yet to be firmed up.”

Councillor Simon Hackett, Wednesbury Town Committee chairman, added: “I would endorse that it’s essential that people who gave their lives in these conflicts are recognised and at a town level I will be working closely with the local Wednesbury group to assist in any way that I can.”

The campaigners are calling on donations to help reach the £60,000 needed.
