Zuiverloon could play – Mowbray
Tuesday 19th August 2008, 11:47AM BST.
Olympics star Gianni Zuiverloon looks poised to make his Albion debut on Saturday with boss Tony Mowbray believing he is returning from China in peak condition.
The 21-year-old summer signing is yet to play for the Baggies, after jetting off to join the Dutch Olympics squad a week after moving from Heerenveen.
The £3.2million U21 international is due back at the Baggies training ground on Thursday and should be available to face Everton at the weekend.
Mowbray said: “We’ll have a look at him when he comes back but he could be in contention for Saturday. He’s played four games over there so his fitness levels shouldn’t be in question. We’ll see how he is after the journey and I’ll chat with him when returns.
“The reason he is here because we identified he is a very good player. We are looking forward to getting him back into the squad and back into contention for a place in the team.”
Zuiverloon is viewed by Mowbray as potentially his most exciting summer signing. He seems likely to play against the Toffees at the Hawthorns.
Mowbray reckons Zuiverloon will return to Albion having learned from the Olympics experience.
He said: “I spoke to Gianni’s agent the other day and watched his game against Argentina the other night,. He played against Lionel Messi, Roman Riquelme and people like that in an amazing arena.
“It was great to see a West Bromwich Albion player playing in such an arena and such a game, against such great players.
“It was a great atmosphere and there some of the best players in the world on the pitch. Gianni did exceptionally well. He was fast, athletic and comfortable on the ball.
“I’m glad for myself and the team that he is on his way back and will be back in training on Thursday. But for the boy it would have been a great occasion to play in the semi-final of the Olympics against Brazil.
“I watched him walk on the pitch alongside full Argentina internationals and great, great players. It was quite special and hopefully the Premier League arena will hold no fears for him.”

Playing against Messi and co will help with Ziuvi’s learning curve… he will be an awesome addition to the squad, and if he’s fresh enough I think TM might just chuck him in – however I think a spot on the bench is more likely against Everton.
I look at all our transfer activity – the done deals and the speculation, and I aint been this excited since we brought Gary Owen and Peter Barnes from Man City in 78/79.
ToMo is assembleing a squad who will suprise many teams this season and hopefully ram some pundits words back down their throats !!

I aint been this excited since I woke up on my ‘lazy boy’ seat in the Emirates on Sunday morning!!
If he’s fresh from the flight back, then sod it, get him in, but I think he’ll be on the bench this week too. If Mogga rates him so highly, he must be some player.

14) to say hofekins isnt fit to wear the shirt is a disgrace. He was quality for us last season and has had a poor game against arsenal away. Is that what we do 1 bloke has 1 bad game and he isn’t fit to wear the shirt

Agree with Baggie 20. Hoefkens was our MOTM against Portsmouth in the Cup semi. He’ll be ok but it’s good that we have competition in that position.
