Walsall blog: Get to the Banks’s!

Tuesday 19th August 2008, 9:32AM BST.

scun-small-1.jpegWalsall blogger Mark Jones talks about top six starts, players yet to return and bemoans the poor attendances ahead of Saturday’s trip to Crewe.

Right, first the good news. A 100% home record and the top six place that we kept warm for so long last season. All we have to do now is keep it going for another 44 games!

Just as I was thinking I’d be cutting and pasting the same paragraph about ‘plenty of effort but not enough goals in the team’ every week throughout the season, up popped man of the match Jabo with a deserved and welcome winner.

I did actually overhear someone coming out of the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday saying that an average of four points from two games ‘should be enough come the end of the season’.

You can’t really argue with the logic of that – personally I’ll be disappointed to say the least if 92 points isn’t ‘enough’ – but what separates us Walsall fans from the rest is our profound realism.

Nobody (well apart from the aforementioned bloke) is expecting runaway success this season. I still think top half will take some doing, but the Saddlers at the moment seem like a work in progress.

Reich and Hughes still need match fitness, the young players are still developing, the new faces still need time to gel. Add to that, Ricketts, Mattis, Weston and Roberts are still to return.

Getting that all-important second win as soon as possible is next on the agenda.

Now for the bad news! What concerned me most about Saturday and what should be concerning those running the club, was the 4,162 attendance.

If my estimate of Scunny following is correct, then we attracted less than four thousand for the first Saturday home game of the season.

Only Hereford got lower in League One and there were five higher in the bottom division.

It was 400 less than the lowest Saturday crowd of last season, lower than any of the August fixtures in League Two the season before – and that was immediately after relegation.

Last season we averaged over 5,000 home supporters per league game, so why are fans staying away?

Obviously times are hard at the moment and Walsall have always drawn from a relatively low-income catchment area to start with.

I suspect this will be the primary argument put forward by the club but the credit crunch is nationwide. I includes Burslem (6,643 at Port Fail), Nottingham (4,325 for County v Darlo) and plenty of other places with lower division clubs.

Clearly there are fans who have followed the Saddlers recently who are reluctant to attend the Banks’s at the moment. Last season’s post January 31st slump and the subsequent departure of Dicky Dosh may have had an even bigger impact than had previously been imagined.

I know people who have stopped attending regularly or who are picking and choosing their games. I’d wager there are plenty of others out there who do too.

I also know fans who, for a variety of reasons, haven’t renewed season tickets in the past couple of years and have never been contacted to ask why, despite the club presumably having all contact details on their database.

If the club doesn’t ask people why they’ve stopped attending, it makes it very difficult for them to do anything effective about it.

What happens on the pitch will make a difference to some extent. A good run for Jimmy’s boys will persuade some to return but I feel that others will need a bit more coaxing.

Huddersfield, Vale and Bradford, for the second season running, have drastically reduced ticket prices and seen a steep rise in crowds.

Now I’m not suggesting that we copy this (it’s just about the wrong time of year for that), or that our pricing is too steep (it isn’t). My point is that these clubs have made a gesture, a huge statement of intent and done so in a positive way.

In short, these clubs have recognised the importance of their supporters. I hope Saturday’s crowd will provoke the same kind of thinking in the corridors of power at our place too.

    What planet are you on?
I’ve just lost my job because of the down turn in the business and the country.
You really think I can now fork out £16.00 every other week to see the team I love…. and there are 1,000′s like me in the same boat.

Huddersfield have sponsors to discount every ticket sold by substantial ammounts to celebrate there 100th season in the league.
Walsall have always been one of the cheapest, but also one of the most frustrating teams and this season is no different.

Poor home attendances but we shall still have good support on the road
I have heard supporters saying they are not paying money into the Bankss whilst the present ownership is in place and will only support the team away
I find this strange one, they may have arguments with the owner but not going to watch home games just damages the atmosphere for the team and reduces even further money being spent on the club
Get behind the club, take advantage of events like the Leyton Orient game (one adult and two kids for a tenner)
I understand its tough if you are out of work, maybe we can reduce ticket costs for the unemployed!

Jonesy, you seem to have upset a few people with your cost-cutting comments, however, the club will upset season ticket holders if they reduce the entrance price of a few games, it’ll end up being more expensive to buy a season ticket, but i guess we get priority for the big cup games !!??!!

I was surprised also by the low attendance, I would guarantee 1,500 extra would have been there had we seen Walsall pay £100,000 for 2 players.

Many Fans have become disruntled with the owners over many years, and I think the end of last season is the straw that broke the camel’s back for many of them. I was on the verge of not renewing my season ticket and only the social aspect of seeing friend I don’t see other times persuaded me otherwise.

I think the hint of a transfer fee for a player may change a few people’s minds. Granted many of our signing I think will do ok, if not great at this level, but we’re still only looking at free transfer players. A real fee and a lower league name would work wonders for the belief that the board really do want us to do well.

The credit crunch and unemployment have nothing to do with it. Just look at other opening day attendances from other areas of the country. Even so, we, like any other business, should be building and growing our fanbase, not watching it shrink. Only the stupid ones stand there scratching their heads wondering why we’re losing fans. If you still don’t know why, answer this question: Why Should I Support Walsall? To get regularly mocked by the chairman? To watch poor tactics inspired by a nobody manager? To know that every good young player that comes through will be sold to the first bidder? … I could go on…

1.Peter – at what point does he mention anything about your employment situation or say “you there Peter, you’ve just lost your job, thats no reason for you to stop away from the Banks’s” thats right he doesn’t so your comment is way out of context.

Walsall do not advertise -and their publicity is non-existent compared with other teams. Throughout the summer even those interested in the club scoured the newspapers and internet for news – every other team seemed to have at least some rumour circulating -but not Walsall.
At one time posters could be seen in the townadvertising home matches.- And what happened to ideas of half time entertainment for families. They need to market the club – and provide interest for spectators other than the very occasional interest provided on the field.

Just wait til they sell Tony Gerrard to the Blues and don’t re-invest the money!

To be honest I don’t think it matters to JB about the attendance, his pension keeps rolling in.

    Frank is right about publicity.
The online E&S rarely has anything to report.
Please create some publicity even if it’s about transfers that will never happen!

Ref the publicity thing. If anyone bothers to look on the website today!!!!
There is absolutely nothing on it. The only comments are on the message boards and that is all from concerned supporters. Nuff said!!

If i can take you back to 31/01/08. How about we keep Dann & Fox and offer more than a pathetic £1000 a week for Ricketts. We then get promoted through the playoffs whilst our average gate in the championship is around 7000 per home game. Unfortunately and as usual Mr Bonser puts his personal bank balance before the progression of the club and you wonder why supporters are staying away.

Why do so many people crticise Jeff Bonser. Do they not realise that without him there would not be a Walsall Football Club. As memorable as Fellows Park was, the decision to move to the Bescot ( now Banks’s Stadium ) created more opportunities to develop and sustain WFC.The loss of fox and dann, so what ? They did not want to continue playing for the club, so let them go, we have adequate replacements. And if gerrard goes, agian, so what ? do we really want players who are prepared to slug out out with the fans ( ref scunthorpe ). Yes, times are hard, but remember we are also in the middle of the holiday season when gates are normally lower. Give credit to Jimmy Mullen. Have you not worked out that our revival last season came immediately after he arrived .Richard Money ? Look him up on the web, never stayed anywhere longer than two seasons, abrasive to the press and fans ( except when he wanted them on his side). Don’t be negative, just because you do not like the club owner is no excuse for not supporting the team. get positive – support the lads !!!

    Re Jack (16)
I believe that you believe that you’re right, but you’re not.Mr Bonser uses the ploy that he has put the club up for sale, but in actual fact he is terrified someone may offer the correct amount of money. He knows full well that WFC is an extremely lucrative enterprise
that he really doesn’t want to lose. No one would argue that he is a supporter of WFC but he is also and primarilly a businessman and as such he is here to make a profit. So your comments re if he wasn’t here , there would be no WFC are absolute garbage. One way or another there will always be a Walsall Football Club.

Well said dicklands! what a load of garbage from jack. Is he related to Bosner, sell Gerrard as well, what a joke! You only have to cast your mind back to the sale of Fellows Park, we were selling a ground we owned, moving to a new site and would have money left over. What happened, we ended up not owning our new ground and in debt, with Mr Blower as chairman to deflect all complaints, what a joke! Nothing has changed so why should we be surprised.
