Man lying in road is killed by a car

Monday 18th August 2008, 4:15PM BST.

A man was killed as he was struck by a car while lying in the road in Walsall.

Stephen Phillips, 49, was hit by a Rover at about 9pm on Saturday and died in hospital shortly afterwards.

He had been spotted collapsed in Darlaston Road, close to the traffic lights at Old Pleck Road.

It is believed two vehicles narrowly missed the man before he was hit by the Rover,  driven by a 27-year-old Wednesbury man.

Acting Inspector Neil Creed, of Walsall Police Station, said a motorist had stopped at the scene.

Officers want to trace two other vehicles seen travelling along Darlaston Road.

The victim lived at nearby Eden House.
