Wolves 4 Sheffield Wed 1 – verdict

Saturday 16th August 2008, 5:45PM BST.

shf-small-1.jpegWolves’ man of the moment Chris Iwelumo was unplayable at times as Mick McCarthy’s men started their Molineux Championship programme with a well deserved win against Sheffield Wednesday.

For the third successive game, Wolves were forced to hit back, after going behind to an Etienne Esajas strike in the 15th minute.

That goal was the result of poor defendin,g after the winger cut inside George Elokobi far too easily, before firing inside Wayne Hennessey’s near post.

Wolves, who had already gone close with a Matt Jarvis header palmed away by keeper Lee Grant, hit back strongly. After two half chances for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, the home side levelled through Iwelumo on 28 minutes.

The big striker powered home a downward header, from Kevin Foley’s left footed cross.

Defender Richard Stearman headed over and winger Michael Kightly had an effort tipped over in a dominant first half for Wolves, which ended with honours even.

After the break, Wolves managed to score the goal’s their play deserved. The impressive Matt Jarvis won the 54th minute penalty, driven home by Ebanks-Blake, which opened the strikers account for the season.

Iwelumo struck for the second time three minutes later, after Michael Kightly had hit the post following Ebanks-Blake through ball.

With the game won, Wolves were overflowing with confidence and Jarvis fired wide, before substitute Dave Edwards wrapped things up with a fourth after another through ball from Ebanks-Blake.

Jarvis richly deserved the standing ovation he received from the fans, after he was replaced on 75 minutes by Andy Keogh.

He was one of five changes Manager Mick McCarthy made to the side from Tuesday’s 3-2 extra time win over Accrington Stanley.

The Wolves boss was justified with this impressive display. The only blemish for Wolves was the seventh minute departure of captain Jody Craddock, with what appeared to be an Achilles injury.

At last, a positive team selection based on merit. Iwelumo deserves to be ahead of Keogh and Jarvis is way ahead of S Ward. The rest of the team picks itself at the moment. The manager got this right and the result justified his decision. Keep this up Mick and you’ll get the majority of fans back on side. For to long MM’s kept faith with his favourites who put a “shift in” but don’t get results. This is why the fans turned last season. If MM carries on with team selections like Saturday then the results and plaudits will hopefully follow, it’s promotion or bust this year!

A very good result and a good all-round performance thought the defence still looked fragile and at times Sheffield looked quicker with better technique.

I cannot remember the last time I left a home game feeling so happy. What a difference Matt Jarvis makes on the left wing, this boy really does go, please keep him in the team home and away.

Also Iwelumo makes a real difference up front bring aggression, know how and real scoring ability.

Finally we have Kightly and Jarvis on the field together and as we were all hoping we look full of goals. Iwelumo is ideal to take advantage of the number of crosses we will get in and frankly I don’t care if we concede more this season as long as this attacking approach continues.

Well we’re scoring goals you can’t complain about that, but when is the defence gonna sort them selve out. If we can combine goals with good defending we’ll be just fine. Jarvis has won his position back with a top class performance. Chris iwelumo has been mint so far. We’ve defo got competition for places this year with keogh losing his place already and vokes on the bench, and mark davies putting a shift in in the cup and edwards scoring yesterday, so jones and henry have to perform or else they’ll fall to the bench or even further. this season looks to be an exciting one.

All Hail King Iwelumo !! If this result is a result of playing badly for half an hour then I think I might just be able to bear it !! Bring on the Tractor Boys at Portman Road !!

Looks like MM is gonna have to go in to the market for a Centre Back – maybe two with the news that Craddocks injury looks like an achilles.

Six goals for and three against – it was a long time ago that I remember we had a plus three goal difference !! Come on me babbies !! The future is Gold & Black.

Iwelumo played a blinder just what we needed a forward who wants and gets the ball when its played to him some lovely lay offs. Him and SEB should be the best partnership in the division. Must say best performance seen for some time mind you didn’t like the first 15/20 mins thought we were nervy at the back. If we are going to move on still need a quality/experinced centre back who can challenge Craddock and Stearman as first choice and need to ensure first choices remain fit.

Attackers-Playing to our target man Iwelumo right down the middle wasgreat to watch- not like CCC;CrapCarlCort playing right/left wing with Tomo the Pole down the centre.SEB still not exploded this season, but god help our oppenents when he does especially with 8ft Chris winning every aerial ball put forward.
Matty/Kites – will rip teams to pieces with pace, trickery & workrate of these pair was massive.
    Midfield-settling well Karl/Jonah & compliment each other well.Edwards,Davies are real good back-up.
Defence-still treading water & look extremely vunerable when teams run at us.

Great result. No doubt there are still some defensive issues and maybe something required in midfield for us to take the division by storm but with the wingers and forwards in this form, if we let in three I’m pretty sure we’d score four.
there’s a suggestion in some of the posts that Mick was forced by circumstance into this formation. Lets not forget that all of the impact players were in fact MM signings.
    Well done everyone.

Don’t we all feel like the cat who got the cream? Not many teams will be able to withstand our two wingers and a forward who will get his head on the ball and another who only knows how to shoot. Things look good which means good old Ipswich will probably stuff us…..(only joking)

I think keogh is a good player to have as a sub while the battle for the midfield positions is clearly going to hot up.

I was so proud of the boys on sat even though Wednesday might have had two before we scored.

Oh well…Moses Mick WILL lead us to the promised land.

At last we play attacking football because MM leaves out Keogh and Ward, Best player on view was Folly, his poise and reading of the game is fantastic always picks out a Wolves player when distributing the ball from defence.
Only other comment cannot play Henry and Jones together one or the other both same type of player need Edwards of Davies more creative and support the forwards.

I’d also like to make the comment that for all the criticism that he received pre season, Neil Collins actually looked like a centre half on saturday!

Great result and especially after a poor start and early disruption to the defence, I thought Collins did ok but to be fair he won’t play against Deon “gone for a” Burton and fat Leon every week, so a Centre Half is still a priority, probably more so now Jody’s injured.
I was a lot more concerned about David Jones, he continually lost the ball when in possession, can’t trap a bag of cement and IMO the game passed him by on Saturday, I have to agree with 29 I think Jones & Henry are too similar, get Davies or Edwards in.
That said, you can’t fault the result or the attacking style of play, long may it continue.

a good sound win against a team without their two best players (sodje and tudgay) and who lost their striker due to injury. Plenty of attacking football but we haven’t been tested against a quality side yet (accrington stanley don’t count). confident start to season but I’m reserving my judgement until we get a decent CB.

Great performance Saturday, nice to see us scoring a few goals.
I was worried for the first twenty minutes or so when they pulled us around at the back and if they’d had a bit more composure we could’ve been in trouble – new CB a must now although to be fair Collins played well.
Only other negative point if I’m being picky is that we should’ve scored a few more!

    Hej Dan ( no 42 ),
I agree about Anthony Gerrard, the Saddelers fans I know, expected him to go before either Dann or Fox, he had a good game up against SEB in the recent friendly.

As for Sat 4 . 1 win, it really was a good 2nd half performance, and quite a revelation to play with 2 pacey wingers and two decent front men ( long may it continue ). If we can keep up the pace and agression up front and on the wings, we should be well set for this season, lets hope Dave Jones can add some “guile” in Midfield, because not every team that comes to Molineux is going to try to play such “open” football as the Owls did !
