Keogh wants to do an Ipswich
Saturday 16th August 2008, 12:11PM BST.
Andy Keogh has challenged Wolves to ‘do an Ipswich’ and turn Molineux into a fortress this season.
Wolves kick off their Championship home programme against Sheffield Wednesday and striker Keogh has urged his team-mates to make Molineux a place the opposition fears.
Ipswich had the best home record in the Championship last season and were unbeaten at Portman Road until February.
Keogh wants Wolves to emulate the Tractor Boys.
He said: “I know every club says this at this time of year, but if you can make your home ground your fortress, like Ipswich did last season, get most of your points at home and pick up a few points away, you should be OK.
“We are thinking of nothing else but winning. We’re at home and we want to win as many of our home games as possible, to give ourselves a platform.
“It should be a big occasion. First home league game of the season, there should be a good atmosphere. Hopefully the weather will be better than last week.”
Midfielder Dave Edwards has revealed the players sometimes get anxious at Molineux – because they want to do so well for the fans.
He said: “We’re all aware of how much it means to the fans. I think perhaps that’s sometimes why we get a little anxious at home, because we’re that desperate to do well.
“Sometimes when it’s not coming off you start to hear the crowd getting on your back to try and force things now and again.
“Everyone here is big enough and strong enough to take stick, it’s our jobs and part of that.
“Everyone is desperate to do that for the Molineux crowd, because there is no better feeling than winning at Molineux.
“It would be good to improve our home form next season.”
Edwards feels Wolves have an excellent chance of being promoted – if they can make Molineux a fortress and pick up points on their travels.
He said: “Our away form last season was reasonably good. We were able to go away to teams, even if we weren’t playing our best football, and we were able to frustrate teams, maybe getting goals on the break through the likes of Sylvan and Andy Keogh.
“If we could just pick up those sort of points away from home, the odd win and draw, and then make Molineux the fortress that it should be then, we’d have a great chance.”
