Wolves blog: Hi ho Wolverhampton!

Friday 15th August 2008, 1:46PM BST.

2wolves-v-kilmarno.jpgThe returning Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd talks Jeff Beck, weddings in Horsham and the merits of Matt Jarvis ahead of Molineux’s first Championship game of the campaign against Sheffield Wednesday.

Hello everybody and thanks for having me back!

You are everywhere and nowhere baby, that is where you are at!

Last Saturday, whilst Wolves were battling their way to a commendable draw down at Home Park, I was at a wedding in Horsham singing along to the Wolves version of the Jeff Beck classic and getting a few dodgy glances from the guests in the process.

All this whilst frantically trying to keep in touch with someone who could keep me up-to-date with the score.

When the result came through, I thought it wasn’t a bad start and a point away at most clubs in this division should be seen as a good beginning to a league campaign.

Then I get back and start reading some of the comments on Expressandstar.com and you would have thought that we had just been relegated!

Negativity gushed from nearly every comment regarding the result. Mick’s got it wrong, why is he playing Stephen Ward, wrong tactics, lucky to get a point, he’ll be gone by Xmas, we need a pacey central defender, moan moan moan!

Anybody who did dare to be upbeat about grabbing a point was shot down in flames!

We are one game into the season. If this is a true reflection on the time and patience that some fans are going to show the team, we might as well all settle for mid-table mediocrity and stay at home.

I came away from the Blackburn game, probably as most did, with a massive sense of pride over the performance and a swell of optimism for the coming season.

Yes, we were a week ahead of Rovers in our preparations for the new season, but we looked fitter and sharper than any pre-season I can remember.

I finished last season saying that Mick should leave the club after we finished seventh. I really hope I am proved wrong this season and this should be the case, looking at the squad we have.

Only time will tell but if you look at the team that Mick has put together over the last couple of seasons, I don’t think there are now many gaps.

We still need that magical central defender with pace and leadership. Of course the majority of us would like to see Jarvis be the preferred starter on the left.

Stephen Ward is an honest pro, but he proved last season that square pegs do not fit into round holes. I was as confused as most to see him start on Saturday.

Right across the pitch we have some of the best quality in this division. From Hennessey in goal to Foley, little George, Stearman and Craddock in defence to Jarvis, Kites, Jones and Henry in the middle and up front with SEB with Keogh, Vokes or Iwelumo, who could be the buy of the season, we look much stronger than last season in nearly every position.

Wasn’t it great to see Mark Davies return and score the other night? All of us would love for him to get back in the starting XI and stay injury free this season.

Fans need to give this team all the backing they deserve right from the off and not berate them when they don’t win every game. This season we probably have the youngest squad in the club’s history (no doubt someone will prove me wrong) and they appear to have real fire in their bellies.

When things are going against them, that’s when they will need the support of the Molineux crowd. Last season when things went wrong, the stadium often went quiet and the neanderthals who like nothing more than booing some of their own players, made their voices heard.

It would be sad if that was repeated this season.

My heart sank when I read the comments after the Plymouth game and, although it is probably only a minority of the opinions, it perhaps illustrates how little time Mick will be granted by the fans to get it right this season.

Everybody is entitled to their view, but I think we should be looking at the new season as a clean slate and not carry over the baggage from some of the failings of the last two previous campaigns.

I truly believe we will be in contention this season, right up there with the favourites Reading and Birmingham. So let’s get behind the team, sing our hearts out for the lads and make Molineux an intimidating place for the opposition – not our own players.

Good luck to the boys on Saturday!

It’s hard to call this season a new slate when we have the same dodgy defence plus a kid who is a bag of nerves. Just think how he’d feel if he made a mistake infront of the Molineux fans? They would tear him up to pieces! I don’t think Craddock is good enough to get us up either. Compare our two centre halves to say… Birminghams. Taylor and Ridgewell who are rock solid. Time will tell but our defence is lacking leadership and quality at the moment.

The only grumble from Last saturday was Stephen Ward, he basically shouldn’t be starting on the left wing especially when Jarvis is fit, Daniel Jones would be my second choice being Jarvis which I think many of my fellow fans would echo. Apart from that, the rest of the team is going well, I think the centre will gel very soon but do need to add 1 more to the squad before 31st August

    Good commments Nathan!

We have a problem at Wolves which has long been there, and I’m not talking about MM or our defence, I’m talking about the defeatest attitude of some of our fans.

It´’s a sad state of affairs when we have played one game and fans immediately, swing like a yo-yo from the positive attitudes that came out of the Blackburn game.

I for one believe that we have been lucky to gather one of the most talented, youthful teams that the Molineux has ever seen. With one missing ingredient – Patience.

I hope that the disillusioned boo-boys stay away until at least xmas, giving the team a chance! 2 yrs ago under Hoddle, we had lost our team, our confidence and many expected us to be relegation candidates. MM came in, and probably over-achieved. But if he can do it once, he can do it twice – just give the kids a chance!

Boo the opposition, not our own team!

Welcome back Nathan glad you’re back with us. Hope you’ve had a good holiday ! I too have been amazed at the amount of negativity so early in the season. Like you say you’d think we’d already been relegated. Let’s hope that over the next five or six games the lads can put us on the front foot and bring all the fans together (a lot to ask ?)
Anyway, look forward to your posts over the coming season and look forward to chatting with you.

would really like MM to succeed, but when he makes baffling decisions like ward on the left wing, he is setting himself up for comments about ‘favourites’, ‘grafting’ etc. i was at the plymouth game and Ward didn’t cut it out there, nice guy tho he is.

kightly on the right and jarvis on the left are what 99% of fans want. two wingers that will take on full backs and beat them.

the team is looking a lot stronger than last season tho – really excited about the prospects this year! Would like to see Iwelumo and Ebank-Blake start too …

I think that we should keep separate the realistic comments being made on this board from from the issue of booing of Wolves players.

It is only in the last 10 years that I can recall Wolves fans having a concerted go at any of our own players.

Great Blogg!! Completly agree! When MM first took over and Hoddle had left us in a mess and expectation at the wolves was rock bottom, Mcarthy picked the team up and got the molineaux buzzing again. I can remember being 6-0 down at home to southampton, and still the crowd were singing there hearts out. Now expectation are higher, we get a 2-2 draw away to a team who are play off contenders, and ur All having ago. I don’t always agree with all of his desisions but lets give it a few months, see how the results go and see if any more players are bought in before jumping on MM’s back!

No Nathan, you have the sentiment all wrong.

You dont want a repeat of last season. Nobody does, but the signs are there already that mick will persist with players “who put a shit in” and continue to play people out of position, or not ply them if they didnt compliment his new wristwatch in training.

Mick has such little time not only because we are a moody bunch, but because he CONFOUNDS US WEEK IN WEEK OUT WITH INEXPLICABLE TEAMSHEETS.

If this “experimenting” had netted results – no one would question the bloke, but it didnt, it hasnt, and it probably never will. We were found wanting, and none of us are going to put up with it for another year.

He has done great things over the close season. I dare say this has been one of the best close season for us in over 20 years. Great signings and great results. Very positive all round. Well Done Mick and Moxey.

Then comes first game. Oh boy. Mad Mick up to his old tricks – spouting favourits to the media, Jarvis on the bench, and a new problem – defence a shambles…

Mick says he’s happy with the squad the way it is – Accrington and Argyle nobbing 4 past us ? Surely not ? On the plus side, we’ve got men up front to neutralise the damage, but surely we need atleast 1 or 2 new faces at the back?

You have to be proactive in this game, and not persist with things that arent working. Can Mick learn from his mistakes.

    Lets hope so.

I’d imagine seeing the negativity upset you, particularly after the stream of positivity and encouragement we saw from you at tail end of the season. Oh, wait. I’m wrong. You moaned like an old woman; yet you now have the temerity to criticise your disciples for moaning. How long will your stance last this time? First home defeat? The next time Ward plays left? It’s amazing how much your summer break has changed. From moaning about the non-inclusion of injured players, wanting the manager sacked, retained, and sacked again in a matter of months, moaning about ‘terrible signings’ and ‘bizarre squad selections’ to chastising fans for being unhappy with a draw at Plymouth. In your words, Nathan “fans are not stupid”, so if they were at a game whilst you were at a wedding, what right do you have to criticise them – particularly for doing what you were doing last season? It stinks of double standards and hypocrisy.
“Fans need to give this team all the backing they deserve right from the off and not berate them when they don’t win every game”. You may do well to read that before starting every blog.

What is it about people that when they discuss football that they think if you arent super positive to the point of blind faith you are disloyal and a negative influence?

If the government kept on making mistakes (as it does) most people would complain and try to get rid of them, so why is it different for the government of a football club ?

MM is a nice bloke who seems to have a good network of scouts picking out decent young players. However, he doesnt seem to be able to get those players to play consistent and attractive football. He cant seem to find the right centre back pairing despite rumours of several different players this summer. And most worryingly of all he has obvious favourites who play regardless of form or of competition within the club ie S.Ward

Im not a negative person or “boo boy” but I politely put it to you that if Mick continues with the same mistakes this season he is not the man to take us up to the premiership

I hope this hasnt been to distressing for all the blind optimists amongst you, you can carry on dreaming of winning the champions league, the winning goal lashed in by Ward of course !

Hopefully the boo boys will restrict their opinions to the anonymity of this website and keep their simple minded views to themselves at the mol.

Honestly, to read some of the comments on here, you’d think we’d been relegated! The result was very good on Saturday considering the conditions, and as you say a draw away from home on the first game is a good start.
I don’t think many teams will come away with a result at home park this season, they seemed like a well organised unit.

A loud minority of fans are anti pretty well any authority in the club, whether manager, coach, owner or managing director-and have been against any of them we had for an awful long time now. A good, positive blog from Nathan.Despite what these “fans” think,we have no divine right to promotion, but I do think that we have(with one addition,I think) a team good enough to challenge.Whether the anti-MM,Moxey,Morgan,O’Connor,Hayward etc etc rump give the team enough time to acheive this is a moot point.

I don’t see why raising legitimate questions at the start of the season rather than half way through is always seen as negativity.

The conditions at Plymouth were appalling but other than that, there was no excuse drawing at a team that most predict relegation for and who lost on Tuesday to a scratch side in Division 2. If you want to be promoted, you win at Plymouth, you draw at Birmingham and Reading.

Equally, if a manager keeps picking a player for the left wing who is clearly not suited to that position, it is fair to raise it. What message does that send to other players such as Jarvis and Jones and it can’t do much for Ward’s confidence?

Equally, we look good going forward and Mick signed Kightly and Kightly is different class.

He’s not completely useless and he doesn’t deserve to be personally vilified but he should be held to account for his strange words, his odd tactics and his dubious man-management.

I think the most telling point is that all other football fans consider Mick to be a joke and like the Plymouth fan commenting in the Observer last Sunday, you have a potentially very good team but you have a very poor manager. Sadly, many of us believe that and whilst we’ll cheer the team like mad on a Saturday, our great belief is that the wrong man is in charge. I trust and hope he can prove me wrong!

Regarding the left-wing position, Stephen Ward earned the start on merit from his pre-season performances. At this moment in time, Matt Jarvis is more like Tim Steele, with little end product and even less willingness to track back. His goal against Blackburn was great, but hopefully our hero-worship of players who do nothing for the most-part and stroll around the pitch left the club when Seyi and Freddy did.

Regarding Dan Jones – he was poor in the week and didn’t work anywhere near hard enough or produce anything for Mick to even consider doing anything but shipping him out again.

If the defence is strengthened significantly we might just have enough to challenge at the top. If not Mick could be staring down the barrell by xmas and the atmosphere at the mol would be grim. And with MM’s record at signing defenders since he arrived I fear the worst – ironic as I remember Mick being a decent centreback in his playing days!

This squad is playoff material, although if Mick selects the correct players from the squad then perhaps? need a centre back with pace, no one available so a loan looks our best bet, MM see’s something in Stephen Ward that I and many others fail to see, I think it’s the blue eyed boy syndrome. Karl Henry is adequate but again Mick’s got him down as our best all round Midfielder, first name on the team sheet, again he can see more than me, I think he just likes a grafter, same applies with Keogh. Jarvis, Iwelumo, and a fit Davies would all be in my first 11, all have more quality than the previously named 3.

Jarvis was just as ineffective as Ward was on Saturday, I’m getting a bit fed up of this hero worshiping of players who aren’t playing. For all of those who watched Jones play on Tuesday, I hope that I won’t see any more posts claiming he should be playing ahead of Ward. Not wanting to knock the lad but he had an absolute howler of a game.

Mick sees the players day in and day out, he knows them better than we do as at best we get to see them for 90mins a week

2.Constructive criticism is good because if you live in a world where you think everything is rosy you are heading for a fall, so please don’t knock it if it is a reasonable argumwent. Equally criticism for the sake of it, such as picking on every word Mick utters and pulling it apart or knocking the same players every week, is destructive and harmful and does no-one any good.

Much will depend on the start to the season. It will affect the players confidence (particularly at the back) and the atmosphere generated by the crowd.

Personally I think we will score goals, but I also think we were lucky to concede so few last season and the defence doesn’t look much stronger than last year to me.

Now if we had another Lescott, we would be in with a shout of automatic, but as it stands I’d be surprised if we did any better than scraping into the play offs. This year there are stronger teams than in recent years and we won’t have a squad to compete in certain positions.

    Hi Nathan

    Good to have u back!

Just a thought tho …. whilst i think calling for the manager’s head after just 1 game of the season is ridiculous, it is borne out of the frustration that last season nurtured with the wrong players being played in the wrong positions.

So we get to the first game of the new season, MM has amazed most people by actually agreeing that the fans were right to criticise some of the performances last season and you think ‘maybe he has seen the light’ and recognised many of the msitakes that resulted in dividing the fan base last season.

Then lo and behold he starts all over again by starting Ward (A STRIKER) on the left wing ahead of Jarvis (A WINGER) and all of a sudden it becomes blatantly obvious that the bloke hasn’t learnt a thing!

It is apparent to 90% of Wolves fans and 100% of pundits that Jarvis is the better winger and Ward contributes very little to the team when he is deployed on the left wing – he certainly does not have the drive and ability to take a player on and he can not cross a ball to save his life so why play him on the wing?????

Now i am not calling for MM to be replaced (yet) but if he continues to make these baffling team selections then i fear it is only a matter of time and whilst a point away against Plynouth in appalling weather conditions may not be a bad result – who knows what would have been the outcome if we had played an out and out winger on the wing from the start (after all Jarvis was mentioned more times in his 20 minutes and created more problems for Plymouth than Ward did in his 70 minutes).

We are still work in progress, MM might not pick the team that pleases us all the time, but we all know he has been trying to sign a defender without breaking the bank.
So lets get on board tomorrow and get some points on the board. I think Jarvis should start, Iwelumo looks the biz and we should score more than last year. C’mon you Wolves.

    Good Blog Nathan.
I agreed with most of what you said last season… you told it like it was.

People are saying you are changing you tune but thats not really the case. If its awful you criticise & if its was good you gave credit where credits due. Thats not being fickle its just common sense.

We had a painful goal drought combined with the Freddy issue. Now we are scoring for fun with Vokes, SEB, Kites & Iwolumo all looking very promising. Nothing to boo there.

Last season Mick made huge mistakes on & off the pitch & his PR was shocking. Now hes slowing learning not to ‘bite the hand that feeds him’

Last season we should have done better. We were promised automatic promotion in a weak Championship & failed dismally to deliver. Now we have realstic expectations in whats expected to be a far tougher division.

Last season we were apparently building a young hungry squad which to the untrained eye appeared to be a squad of ex Sunderland Irish pensioners. Now its clear that Mick’s got the young hungry ‘shift putter inners’ that he’d been preaching about.

But last season, believe it or not was, err, last season. Get over it. Its gone.

Seems to me that too many people got into a habit of booing & can’t break it now we are doing ok. Admittedly so far its not great. We’ve had a couple of 6 out of 10 performances. But they are worlds apart from the 2′s & 3′s out of 10 that entertained us the middle of last season.

Now Mick getting it together. I think he’s done very well in the transfer market. Its still a concern that we haven’t got a convincing defence. Hopefully we can outscore the opposition till they start to gel at the back. Or till we eventually find a decent defender that is prepared to earn only 50 times as much as I earn.

Stearman, Collins, Elokobi & Foley are young & inexperienced but could develop together into a class defense over the next 5 to 10 years. Don’t write them off after just 2 games together!

AD…I fail to see how Mick ‘CONFOUNDS US WEEK IN WEEK OUT WITH INEXPLICABLE TEAMSHEETS’ after just 1 league game & a meaningless cup game. Would that be ‘Inexplicable’ as in he played Ward instead of Jarvis. As I said earler… some people just can’t let go of last season’s negativity.

    Simon :)

2 and 10, well done lads, you’ve really wound up the true Wolves fans. By the way, how are things going over at the Hawthorns? Good, fair, sensible blog, Nathan. We need to let the current crop of players settle in to the new season with the Molineux faithful supporting those playing in the colours; good, bad or indifferent, then the twelfth man will be doing his job; motivating those having good or poor games to perform to their maximum. Only if we support the team on the pitch, can we eventually make a fair judgement. The Jarvis, Ward, Jones argument has been answered by those who followed preseason and the two matches but wont stop those with prejudiced set views from repeating their Kant. I’m a Freddy fan but he’s gone and I hope he has a mare against us, but wish him well otherwise. If we lose the next two matches, I will be in a black despair but I would still be singing the praises of our players. I’m old enough to have seen it all before and to know that in a marathon you will go through really bad times; every team does. I do, however expect us to win the next two games. With the Molineux behind them I would be certain of it. CLEVER that `Sothbank genius`; Does the name stem fom when we loaned suchwonderful real estate out to you Baggies?

Seems to me that you are coming back just as confused as most of us!

We want to start again on an equal basis, but “one-Trick-Mick” has already started stamping his authority on the team.

Instantly, those of us with any football knowledge see that we are returning to last seasons uncoordinated failed tactics!

Should we remain silent to protect the tender souls of the Happy Clappers, or should we expose what is happening yet again? Just become Realists?

Here we go again on the WW rollercoaser. C’mon me babbies! It is hard to get up for this season after blowing it last year. I really hope we are stronger mentally this year to cope with the ups and down of a very competitive league. We have a talented team. Can they deliver? I am concerned our team may not be able to cope with the pressure of home games. I am concerned at Keogh’s comments above. I would like to see a strong leader in the INCE mould. Ward at wide left is a no no.He is no winger. I do hope Jarvis can show his form this year. I want to see our wide play actually getting crosses in from the by line by going hard for the line. Our team doesn’t do it enough. There was too much cutting back by wide men last year who didn’t have the confidence to do it (the Sean Newton factor!). This disrupts the momentum of the build up and is easier to defend. I am sure more goals come from these type of crosses than cut backs. By the way WWFC PLEASE get rid of that HI HO song. A turgid meaningless plod just to shout HI HO WOLVERHAMPTON a couple of times. Embarrasing. The song has NO relation to Wolves nor the area. Let’s find something better, with a bit of local connection. Bring back the awesome LIQUIDATOR, I say. It is a Wolves classic. We are mad not to use it. It was a far more intimidating song than Hi Ho happy clappy. Come on Wolves, lets really get going this year and make a positive start. I am sick of 7th.

I have knocked Wolves and the poor management for a couple of non sensical seasons for the team but this result “could” be the start of a good run.

Remember, last season and the one before we had the odd exceptional game followed by a stupid poorly played one. The underlying reason each time was confusion. MM gets together a great set up and tends to change it around and try something different and fails!

This isn’t American football, with special teams and 400 guys on the sidelines it’s a team with a few subs.

We will see as the season progresses. This was a good result, however we also have to think about Sheffield Wednesday and in a few months see the quality of that team. Afterall beating a poor team isn’t must of a feather in ones cap, however if they actually become a viable quality team then we did well.

It’s all future. All we know is that somehow MM produced a good team capable of winning games.

I just hope (as they say) it wasn’t a blind pig finding the one truffel in the yard!

We have had a great start to the Season and it has to be said Well done to Mick he has been proved right again with his shrewd signings well done. I am very happy for us to be sitting at the top of the league right now but am kept from going overboard by our owner. I am still not convinced that he is committed to our long term development as he has yet to show us any of his money. He is still sitting very pretty on his £10.00 investment and making money as he has made a profit in the transfer windows while he has been here despite promising to invest £30 million we are still yet to see any of his money. I also find it hard to swallow that Moxey is still our highest earner and yet all he has ever done is alienate the fans yet Wolves pay him so greatly for this? I do hope that this is our season and that it does not come back to haunt us that we have again missed an opportunity for major investment.
