McCarthy: We need to do an Albion

Mick McCarthy wants Wolves to ‘do an Albion’ and keep scoring goals – but has stressed the need to repeat last season’s clean sheets record.
Wolves go into their first Championship home game against Sheffield Wednesday having conceded four goals – but scored five in the first two games.
The Molineux boss wants his side to continue to filling their boots, but to tighten up at the back.
He said: “We needed to improve on putting the ball in the net. West Brom scored a load of goals and conceded a lot more than us but still won the Championship.
“Scoring goals is paramount to winning games but we did take a lot of pride in our clean sheets record. So far this season, we’ve created plenty of chances and scored five goals.
“Clean sheets is always a requirement. If you don’t concede a goal you never get beat.”

To reduce the risk of conceding too many we need an experienced CB for which we will need to pay a good price. Let’s not mess around trying to trim off a hundred thousand here and a hundred thousand there lets just get him (whoever he may be !!). I honestly think that would leave us with a squad capable of challenging for a top two spot.

Completely agree. But Mick could of surely found another team to base this analogy on and not our fiecest rivals! Albions goalscoring our defensive record would probably be looking at 100 points mark! Lets just win our home games draw away and thats 92 points, if only it was that easy!

I know this may open a can of worms, but i believe that the sooner we get Matt Murray back between the sticks the fewer goals we are likely to concede. As much as i love Wayne and i am sure he has a big future, Matt exudes so much more confidence, add to that a decent centre half i think we stand a real chance of an automatic place, any thoughts?

It was obvious we needed to score goals last season but we didn’t, instead we concentrated on not conceding them which meant having more men behind the ball and not enough in front!
If we are going to get it right this time, by all means tighten up at the back but NOT at the expense of having only 1 or 2 up front to score goals.
Please McCarthy do NOT make that mistake again!
If you score more than you concede, who cares?
Supporters don’t, only managers, so get your priorities right Mick!

If we are to be sucessful then we need a united fan base, the bickering and incessant negativitiy needs to STOP. Last year your defensive record and clean sheet record was quality but your goalscoring was poor
This year your goalscoring is good but your defense is weak, Mcarthy spent too much time on forward this year and he totaly forgot his defense. Bobo Balde – ive saw dogs play better, seriously his areial threat is good but anything low he cant get, i saw him on Celtic Tv not long back in a reserves game he was awfull, go for somebody who has championship experience to get you out the league, ie Norwich defender i forget his name but i think you lot no who im on about

Never let a statistic get in the way of a good debate. MM says Albion conceded ‘a lot more’ than Wolves last season and still won the Championship. Well, a glance at the table shows that the Baggies conceded a massive SEVEN goals more than Wolves. Yes, seven. I know, that’s a lot isn’t it? For the record, West Brom scored 35 more goals than Wolves. Now that’s the definition of ‘a lot’.

And re FiltonWolf, well I always count you as one of the exceptions to the rule. There are a number of people who post on this board whose opinions I respect (whether they are pro or anti-MM) because they at least present a sensible and articulate debate, and I consider you amongst that group. My criticism was aimed towards the morons who leave ill-conceived, negative rubbish that is frankly an embarrassment to read and to associate with our football club. I did not mean to personally offend you, so apologies if I did – but you have to admit, the proportion of cerebrally-challenged people that post on here is higher than on 606. Comparatively it seems to present a more balanced and considered opinion… which is why a number of E&S posters have ‘defected’ there – much like myself. Perhaps you feel this board can do without my postings and opinions, and that’s fair enough – you will see that the frequency of my posts here is decreasing rapidly anyway. People keep talking about the need for Wolves to get a new Centre Back but that posistion hasnt changed from last year- infact you have bought Stearman so you must of enhanced it?! What (i think) Wolves need is a decent CREATIVE Center Midfielder (not another McCarthy battler) to provide the service to your strikers! For Example over the past 2 seasons we have had the likes of Koumas, Koren, Greening, Gera, Morrison, Brunt, Texeria (all players who can play) – no wonder we were top scores. You only ever seem to have Kightly- he cant do it all on his own, especially as wingers can become isolated!
Im saying all this as i would like to see Wolves up there as i live in Wolverhampton myself!

Like you I get fed up with the pointless criticism but I tend to try and turn a blind eye most of the time and just try and engage people in sensible discussion whether I agree with their point of view or not. Please, if you have a constructive argument or discussion to bring to these boards bring it on. The more posts like that the more sensible discussion will happen. I’ve said many a time I am happy to chat with anyone no matter what their opinion as long as it doesn’t get personal.

So, it’s Mick ‘Alchemist’ McCarthy now. He’s figured out the magic formula for successful footballing gold.
Take eleven players, get some of them to score more goals than their opponents and get a few players at the back to stop those same opponents from scoring in the first place.
Do those things and you’ve struck promotion formula gold.
Genius Mr. McCarthy. Dunno how you worked all that out. That’s where we’ve been going wrong all this time! So glad you’ve figured it. We’ll be invincible now.

Re your comment on replacing Hennessey with Murray I must say that I agree if he is fit enough. More important than that is replacing Craddock with a player who does not get turned so easily and has more pace. MM knows what a good centre half is he was one himself. Surely Davies is a must for a run in the team. Big George will tidy up at the back all day with enough help.

No worries Filton… sad to say, three out of the four posts left since your response kind of back up the reason why I don’t post so much on E&S these days! Criticism, but by no means constructive. My little rant at the top was borne out of frustration at the type of folk who will put a negative spin on any situation, no matter what!
I think what I was trying to convey was that I seem to get a little bit more sensible debate over on 606, but that’s not to say that site is without its idiots as well (Renault and Captain Capslock to name but two!).
