Live music go-ahead despite objections

Friday 15th August 2008, 11:31AM BST.

A Black Country pub will now be allowed to stage live music and discos until midnight any day of the week, despite fears from neighbours about late night nuisance.

People living near to the Elisabeth Arms, Overfield Drive, Bilston, sent letters of objection saying they were worried about the disturbance that could be caused but pub bosses vowed to minimise disruption and conditions were placed on the licence, ordering the venue to ensure that all doors and windows remain closed during live entertainment.

Environmental Services initially objected, but withdrew objections after agreeing conditions with licence holders. No other objectors spoke at yesterday’s Wolverhampton City Council licensing committee.

Two letters from people living nearby said they were “horrified” at plans for live entertainment, which they said would lead to a constant noise nuisance and increase disorder on the estate.

Sokhbinder Singh, aged 38, who lives next door, who was at the meeting, said he went to the pub every so often but objected to plans for music because of the extra noise disturbance.

“If there is no noise, we don’t care. But every week we have to put up with noise.

“They are talking about closing the windows and doors but you can still hear it.” Pub bosses said there would be no rock bands and that music events would only be every few weeks.

Nick Walton, for pub owners Mitchells & Butlers, said they were a community pub and landlady Maureen Layland did not want to annoy residents as she lived there herself.

He said much noise and nuisance was caused by people drinking cans in the street, not by customers.

“There has never been an issue with public nuisance and crime and disorder associated with the premises,” he said.

Afterwards committee chairman Councillor Carl Husted said: “We’re disappointed that the people who objected could not turn up so neither of them could argue against the application.

“We accept the applicant’s case that any problems in the area are not directly linked to the pub.”
