Wolves blast ‘bid’ for Celtic’s Balde

Thursday 14th August 2008, 11:30AM BST.

balde.jpegWolves today shot down suggestions they have offered Celtic defender Bobo Balde £27,500 a week to come to Molineux as a ‘complete non-starter’.

A report in Scotland today claimed Wolves have smashed their wage structure to almost match the Guinean international’s near £30,000 a week salary at Parkhead.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is keen on Balde, but ended speculation on signing him three weeks ago when he said the club ‘weren’t in that pay league’.

And chief executive Jez Moxey reinforced their stance when he said: “It’s a complete non-starter.

“We have had no contact with Celtic on this issue whatsoever. It’s completely out of our wage structure.

“What we want to try to communicate is that we just do not do this sort of wage – we don’t pay that sort of money to anyone.”

Balde has a year left on his contract and has been offered a free transfer by Bhoys boss Gordon Strachan. But he has so far refused to go, and is believed to have turned down offers from Sunderland and Birmingham of £15,000 a week.

Wolves believe they are being used by a third party to attract interest in the player.

Chairman Steve Morgan, however, said Wolves may make one more signing before the transfer window shuts.

“If we could wave a magic wand and maybe get in another one or two then we would, but it’s not a case of bringing people in just for the sake of it,” he said.

“They’ve got to be the right players. And if we don’t, we still think we’re in good shape anyway.”

Morgan has revealed the management structure at Wolves is stronger than it was 12 months ago. He kept faith with Moxey and McCarthy when he bought the club from Sir Jack Hayward and believes they are a stronger unit now.

“I was lucky enough to inherit a good team here,” said Morgan. “I very much stand by that. If anything, everyone is even more together over the last 12 months.

“The new generation have come in and the backroom team is younger than it was.

“There are a lot of fresh faces in there now.”

Dont do it wolves stick to your guns, because having one big earner might upset the rest of the squad.
Offer him a competative salery and a bonus an promotion but knowing greedy footballers he will want both a big salary and a big bonus.

I very much doubt we offered that sort of offer for an ageing CB. I doubt there are any Wolves players on more than £10k a week, so £27.500? I don’t think so! Some reporter desperate for a story me thinks!

£27500 a week for a player that gets a free transfer from one of the weakest leagues in Europe. Well done Mick, don’t pay big money for a Celtic reject.

Interestingly I have just read that Wolves/Moxey tried to get Gleeson to sign up before he went to Stockport and in his words bullied him. He is a player like Lee Collins who should be ready to play for our first team and we should not be offering them cheap contracts!

Well Kenny Miller was on something like £18k a week when he was here, he was our biggest earner… so i wouldn’t be surprised if some of our players that were linked to the prem are on money similar to that, maybe a little less. I reckon Ebanks-Blake and Kightly are on more than £10k

At that salary there are plenty more defenders better than Balde to choose from.

However, if thats the going salary required to sign a quality Central Defender then its a question of ambition at Wolves.

I don’t believe some of the comments I read on here at times.
People have slagged off Stearman who spent all of last season in this league and is currently being played in a position he’s not used to yet, but then we get these “get Gerrard from Walsall in” comments!!
He’s not guaranteed to be any better than we have already, it’s Anthony NOT Steve.
My mate goes to watch Walsall and he says that although he’s a good player in their league he might not make the step up.
I agree we need to sign a CB but I would think MM is aware of this too, I don’t think we should “panic buy” as we have in the past, we might just have to wait until January.

Everone knows stearmen needs time to adjust from rb to cb because he played rb all last season at leicester and also that he needs to gel at the back with craddock !!

If we want to break the pay structure, do it for another Paul Ince or Denis Erwin, at least they added a better class that made a difference.

i said some months ago when balde’s name was being mentioned, in the last 18 months he has played maybe 1 or 2 games when there is no one else available and he picks up £30000 a week. he only has another season to go so celtic are trying desperately to get his wages of the books.he’s happy to sit and do nothing.
last year he turned down 2 english premier league teams on lesser wages so there was no way he would come to wolves even on the silly money quoted. we can’t afford those type of wages.

he would be an ok addition but is prone to errors in important games. so no great loss.

we could have had berra if we had acted quickly and bid 2 million as hearts had wanted. berra will go to another team within 18 months for 4-5 million mark my words.

17 Sandwell I would agree that the club would need to pay the money required BUT paying BooBoo that would mean Kite’s agent seeking a meeting as well as SEB and so on.

This Wolves management have done well thus far in transfers so let’s leave them to it. However they should and probably do understand that we do need a central defender or life is going to be difficult. Unless yourr the baggies last year, promotion is gained with a strong defence first.

A friend of mine works for Deloitte and recently they audited Wolverhampton Wanderers, he reviewed all of the players contracts, and there are no wolves players at all anywhere near 20k a week, let alone 30k a week.

The wolves players contracts are quite heavily incentivised, based on appearances and goals and the clubs finishing position.

Wolves wouldnt be able to afford 30k per week. Their standard contracts for players have nothing like this in them. They are based upon age, and each player is put into a category based on his age, position etc, and there is a range of basic wage for each category.

This is utter nonsense, trust me wolves fans.
