Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Morgan: Stars will not be sold
Thursday 14th August 2008, 12:00PM BST.
Steve Morgan has again insisted Wolves will not fall become easy prey to the Premier League vultures and sell their stars.
Key players Wayne Hennessey, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and now Michael Kightly are all committed to the club for the next four years.
And the Woves chairman says they definitely don’t need to be sold.
“We’re an ambitious club and we’re not going to get anywhere by selling our best players,” said Morgan.
“We don’t need to sell them and they’re not for sale so in the nicest possible way naff off!
“We’ve sold players but that was because Mick (McCarthy) felt they didn’t fit into his plans going forward.”
Morgan has decided to take the unusual step of speaking out after being irritated by speculation at star players being linked with Premier League sides.
“As people know, I do try to keep a low profile because I leave the talking to Mick and the lads on the pitch and anything on the commercial side to Jez,” he said.
“At the time I just felt there was too much speculation, and a lot of it unfounded and stories being invented in the press that I wanted to say something.
“There were a number of managers and scouts coming to look at our players and the message I wanted to get out was quite simple.
“It’s great to see ‘Kights’ back and indeed to see all of the new players as well as the existing ones. There’s a good feeling about the squad and I’m very excited.”
McCarthy believes the Carling Cup trip to Rotherham will present just as tough a test as Accrington Stanley after Wolves were paired for the second time with a League Two club in the second round draw.
“It will be another tough game, not least as Rotherham have already put out Sheffield Wednesday,” said McCarthy.

Mick at his best, with his stupid reverse pyschology. Which never works. He said the same about Accrington and we virtually got embaressed. Now he’s saying Rotherham will be just as hard. I aint being funny but if we want to be a premiership side we should be coming out with confident statements, not saying “oh this could be a tough game, afterall, they are Division 2″ He hasn’t got a clue at all. Yes they put out Sheff Wed on penalties or extra time was it? Sheff Wed hit the crossbar 4 times!!!!! Why can’t you be confident mick! You see all the best managers come out and say “We are confident of going there and getting the result” WHATEVER TEAM IT IS. Alex Ferguson and Wenger ALWAYS say this. Can’t anyone else see this?
easy solution 2 the problem mr morgan, make sure we get promoted this year, however im not convinced that this is a priority 4 our club. Our transfer policy appears 2 b a book balancing exercise rather than a commitment 2 reach the prem!!
Unfortunately Mr Morgan the players now hold all the power and it is them and their agents that decide if they want to move on not chairman. You can put your foot down as hard as you like but if a player wants a move they soon get it orchestrated to acheive their goal. The fact they are on long term contract just means you are in a better negotiating position for transfer fees.
And i for one think it is a sorry state of affairs, but this is football today.

I think every Wolves fan knows that Hennessey and Kightly will be playing in the Premier League in 2009/10.
I hope thats with Wolves but there is no way they will stay beyond next summer if we don’t go up.

have you noticed the way he used his words carefully like” we dont NEED to sell them” which leaves a loophole that if they do leave he can just say i never said we wouldent sell?
i mean i love this club but jesus crist you cant build for the futre when theres no present.
the only time i will be happy with stingey morgon is if we get promoted this season and we spend the 30 mil of money we get from being promoted and the 30 tha he said he would invest but i garentee this wil not happen.

I really fail to see what the problem is with Morgan’s comements. Surely its all positive stuff?
We’ve kept our best players, transfer listed all the rubbish (give or take) that everyone wanted rid of. Yes, we do badly need another centre back but I hope we buy the right player at the right price, not the overpaid dross we had in the Hayward era.

You lot really are pathetic.
How many times have we thrown money around and it’s got us nowhere?
Morgan’s a shrewd businessman so he doesn’t want his money wasted. Would you?
We’ve built a decent squad, although another centre-back is a must, so let’s get behind the team and stop all this whinging.

“We are an ambitious club” Well you could have fooled me.When an owner puts in £30 million the club raises a further£5 million in transfers and they then only spends £3 million on incoming players it suggests to me they are happy where they are, ie playing Championship football.I could forgive the lack of spending if we had a few good homegrown youngsters in the team but apart from Hennessy that is not the case.

I honestly can’t believe the pessimists we have for supporters !! Everything that’s said we look for the bad side. I tell you if there was an Olympic sport for moaning and pessimism the Wolves fans could represent GBR and win the Gold in the team and individual events without raising a sweat !! No one in the world would get near us !! Over the last couple of days I’ve read more optimistic things about Wolves from Baggies fans than our own !! I really am mystified and we’re only 2 games in to a season (and only one of those really matters – no offence to the Carling Cup !) I know things might not go right for us come the end of the season and yes I’ll probably have my two pennyworth then but for Gods sake we’ve only just started so give it a rest.

Mr. Morgan seems to have been doing a lot of talking lately. I actually find it all reassuring. Somehow, having the owner talk about all of the plans and developments going on behind the scenes seems to be more concrete evidence of a steady ship being carefully sailed…
…as opposed to whenever McCarthy or Moxey say anything and I feel like we’re off down a fast moving creek without a paddle.
Three M’s at Molineux – Morgan, McCarthy and Moxey. And one of them seems to understand the psychology of being a football fan. Stick around Morgan, I think I like ya.

23. sba …. my friend, I’m not a happy clapper, and I’m not an eternal optimist. However I am prepared to bide my time (as I have done over the last 30 or so years)and hope that this is our season again because I love my team – whoever plays in it and whoever manages it. Yes, it hurts like hell when we don’t win or don’t get promotion and it is frustrating and annoying, but I still love my team and always will. I will moan and groan from time to time but I will not be a boo boy. Look at it realistically – we’re only two games in to a very long season and according to a lot of our fans we’ve already been relegated.
To answer your question about whose opinions carry the most weight I would say both, simply beacuse the chances of anyone that can do anything about it taking any notice are non existent. Everyone is entitled to their opinion without being called a prat or a moron (not that you’ve called me that – just a happy clapper !!) – and I respect your opinion. I’m just saying that being so early in to the season the amount of pessimism is uncalled for.

15, am really worried when I read this sort of stuff.
In a world where the purchase of any gauaranteed real quality is going to cost you a minimum £8 million plus the cost of his wages at around £25,000 per week, you don’t need to be a genius to see what a pittance £35 million is in footballing terms …oh and I forgot that you still have to pay the rest of the staff and overheads!
Financially we are footballing paupers, so what Morgan, McCarthy and Moxey are doing is the only economic way foward for us … and they have found such gems as Kites, SEB et al without busting the club. That’s genius, build from the bottom … M,M & M have the ambition, but they are realists and I as a Wolves fan for 39 years say thanks and keep it up!

I’m liking the policy of buying young up and coming players in a considered way rather than panic buying in a load of has beens as we have seen in the past. Team spirit is important and I think we have that at the moment. Agreed a good central defender is a must but if that happens I think it will be good summers business for Wolves.

Would you still be a boo boy or would you become a temporary happy clapper, praising the team and the manager ? You might ask the same of me if we lost the next six. Well let me tell you I would not become a boo boy over night. I would be extremely concerned and I might have a good moan but it would be constructive and I would still love my team. We could get relegated (God forbid) at the end of the season and I would still love my team. I have loved my team for over 40 years and I hope I will be able to support them for at least another 40 years. I understand that you also love the Wolves and want the best for them, we just go about it in different ways. it doesn’t make either of us right or wrong. Like I’ve said two or three times on this board already I’m just shocked at the amount of negativity so early in the season.

27 You quote such gems as Keightly,SEB et al.Which players does the term “et al” refer to? You say we are footballing paupers(which is open to question)It is obvious we cannot compare ourselves to the likes of Spurs ,Villa etc. However the painful truth is ,when you compare our record to the likes of Albion,Bolton,Wigan .Blues(Clubs with the same size of support) etc it is pitiful.Out of Darkness(30) is completely right, if you examine the FACTS,the club has been poorly run for many years and I see little evidence it is about to change.Surely you judge how successful a club is by its record on the pitch not how plush its restaurants are.

Mr Krabs
Of course we don’t want owners who do that but do we want an owner who has a maximum transfer fee and a rigid pay structure? I am not saying that is Steve Morgan – it is still too early to say but I wish he had told Mick to buy a couple of better quality players so that promotion was more than a mere possibility. You know the story of peanuts and monkeys. Now, £8,000 to £10,000 per week is not peanuts but it is not a big wage in football terms which means so at some point we are going to have to bite the bullet and pay higher wages and transfer fees or fall further behind. As I said before it is early days in Steve Morgan’s Molineux career but this could be a crunch season if we don’t go up and some players want to leave.

mediocre is the word that comes to mind.
i will always give 100% support for wolves at the games but outside, online etc talking to other fans i give my opinions good and bad, grump and groan when i feel the need .
lets be honest we have at best 2 or 3 quality players in our team. we have several prospects and some good championship players, we have a load of dross that we need to ship out.
we have all seen where the problems are for the last 2-3 seasons and the worrying thing is they still persist. lack of goals, and giving goals away.
its alright talking about stadium redvelopment but if we are happy to stay championship team whats the point. the corners could be used but its gonna cost more money so we won’t some builder he is?. also there was talk of moving out to a new stadium, why? where? and why not if its means we have more money from the sale as prime site, surely this is something he has considered.
re the backroom and acadamy its allright producing promising youngsters, but if they don’t get into the team whats the point. we either sell, loan or piss them off so they leave. i liked it couple seasons ago when the youngsters got their chance but they have all gone backwards apart from hennesey we could save several million a year from closing acadamy if we are not going to use the talent produced.
my main concern with wolves is mick, i hope i am proved wrong this season always the optimist, but he seems to be going the same way as last season with his team selections, tactics etc and what he says to the press. i have said many times what if find frustrating with mick, playing player out of position, ignoring players, picking favourites, picking players not up to the job, not using youngsters, formations, tactics, man management, also look what he has actualy spent and how many of the players he has bought we can’t even give away.
anyway moan over. come on the wolves please, give us something to cherr each week.

Cor, blimey, I get off one site because the ammount of negative vibes displayed is frustrating, depressing and making mild mannered me angry and then look what we have here. I’m so peed off with the negativity that all I can manage to do is thank those more restrained, reflective, kind and objective guys who see that our bottle is just over half full. All I need to make my day is Terryclosetwolves fanatic to start posting his inbred cackle… Copied my posting from the other site as I am too drained to type anymore today. Out of darkness…
Believe me, some people, and it is a dour West Midlands trait, though not solely, will not be satisfied or happy even when we are winning every match three nil in a style akin to the Brazilians. I was going to say Harlem Globe Trotters but would that be a mixed metaphor? We have a proud history, which we treat like a millstone around our necks expecting other teams to fall in the wake of our playing staff whom we attract because where else could be more attractive to the aspiring footballer. Get real, we have no divine right to be any better than any other team who have similar aspirations, and they all do. They are also doing what is humanly possible to achieve their dreams. Accrington Stanley, founder members of the league, have fans who think their rightful place is at the top and if they were not aiming to do this as a club there would be little point in existing. Our turn will come again and there will be a time when the current great teams struggle. It may not be in my lifetime but it’s what the club exists for. Everyone knows what the team requires to improve presently and is working towards it. Give the new squad time and support, akin to that versus Southampton, to bed in before prejudging players and management. We can then fairly assess if we are making progress or not. Silly little chants of `Freddy, Freddy…`, what on earth is that in aid of? I rate him more than many but he’s gone. We need to be chanting current players names, good and not so good, in positive ways then the Molineux twelfth man will be doing his bit; building players confidence and love of the club and its fans. Out of darkness, you boo-boys…

43. Debenham………You are a shining light in all this darkness and negativity. Thank you my friend for a brilliant post (not sure about vituperative and mixed metaphors but hey nobody is perfect !!)
I’ve been meaning to pick up on one or two other things that have been posted like why spend so much money on restaurants and facilities ? A football club these days is much more than that. Whether you like it or not money has to come in through avenues other than football. Seminars and business functions bring in an awful amount of revenue these days. If we can collar some of that market then surely it gives the possibility that there will be more made available for buying new players. We haven’t got the backers like Man U (spit) or any of the other big clubs in the premier so we need to boost finances in other ways. I know I will probably get absolutely hammered for this but I think the 3 M’s are doing a grand job. One of the M’s (Mick) I think the jury is still out on and only time will tell on his survival. I for one am still prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.
You do realise that there isn’t so much difference between the happy clappers and the boo boys – for instance the boo boys hate S Ward and rage on at MM because of this. I a supposed happy clapper also have a go at MM about playing S Ward – but because he is playing him out of position – he is a striker for Gods sake not a winger.

I’d guess if you own a football club instant promotion isn’t the only way to measure success. If Mr Morgan had gone out and spent £100 million on players plus another £50 mill on wages, got us promoted and then put us in receivership would that promotion have still been Success?
Better the Morgan way me thinks.

Not the case.

Yeah, the nattering nabobs of negativity are getting me down, too. This doesn’t look like a bad squad, and if the defence can be plugged, we might be in the frame. The man has no real idea of what he is doing and just makes it up as he goes along! We will never get anywhere under this serial failure!
I am very angry because yet another season will be wasted in the Championship when we fail to get promoted yet again! I will die without seeing the team back in the top leagues.
Behind this I suspect that Moxey, the Pie-man, wants it this way. The risk involved in the Premiership is beyond him to manage, and he has prescribed permanent Championship football for this club!
Every season that goes by in the Championship makes that suspicion less neurotic and more real!

we have less ambition than a diseased worm looking to become a world juggling champion.
As for the investment, I do find it ‘odd’ considering we have brought five million into the club, spent three etc. I would love nothing more than to see them throw two or three mill at a quality CB, but I am not sure Morgan is competing to become ‘the most hated man at the club’ as a few have suggested.
We saw Jack trickle millions over the years. They should have thrown at lump at it in one go, like Blackburn did.
They ended up winning the league remember, and look how long they have been there on the back of the success and financial security those two years got them.
Our biggest mistake was not throwing money at it when we had that season in the Prem.
I still think this squad (with one more defender) is good enough to go up, the only question then is whether they spend a pittance next summer instead of the 20million+ it would need to keep us there.

Wolves will never be a succesful club while idiots such as SOUTHBANK DIVVY exist. Young players need support and encouragement to perform and acheive. Booing them or the manager does not help the team, it makes things worse – FACT.
Another fact – the one year expectations were low and we SUPPORTED the team we as fans had fun and the team did well and overacheived. Every other season when the boo boys take control we have underperformed.
Why should a young player try something special or different if it might fail and he will suffer abuse?
Why should a striker go for a 50/50 challenge or sprint 10 more yards after a lost cause if two minutes before the south bank have started chanting for Freddy because he made a mistake? Do you think he missed a goal on purpose?
WHAT PURPOSE DOES YOUR TREATING OUR OWN PLAYERS LIKE THE OPPOSITION SERVE YOU OR YOUR CLUB???
If any boo boy can answer me that then I will stop supporting the lads and boo them like the other Southbank morons.

My reliable sources in Thailand (not telling you,in case you jealous) say that ol’ Thakki is gonna be deported in the end,and Man City will offload Hughesy back to wonderful Blackburn, which will enable Paul Ince to become manager of WOLVES
at the end of October, when it it eventually discovered MM is not good enough.

Morgan, you have more spin than Battling Tops. Promotion this season is essential, or heads must roll

Southbank Barmy Army, i reckon with the crap you write its YOU who will be become the most hated blogger on here. I’m glad i don’t sit next to you in the Southbank, i reckon you’d stand out a mile with all the negative abuse you hurl at the players. Just the sort of fan who has and will continue to hold the club back by totally negative and anti whoever is in charge and jumping on the players backs. Tell me what part of that statement by Morgan was so terrible? I wish fans like you would bog off, you are a disgrace.
