Morgan hails new ‘Boot Room’ boys

Now the Wolves chairman has heralded a ‘new generation’ of backroom staff at Molineux.

Football has changed since Shankly’s day and Morgan has moved with the times, overseeing several backroom appointments this summer, with development coach Steve Weaver and exercise physiologist Dr John Iga drafted on board.

Long-serving Terry Connor has been promoted to assistant manager and there is a new goalkeeping coach in Pat Mountain to replace Bobby Mimms.

Morgan believes the new staff have made a positive difference behind the scenes which will bear fruit on the pitch, where there has been a clean bill of health in pre-season.

“I think we’re seeing a new generation in the backroom staff,” said Morgan.

“It’s not that the previous generation haven’t done a great job – they have – but we’ve got a new generation of people as well.

“We’ve invested more money in the Academy this summer, we’ve extended the gym and brought in hot and cold baths which can be quite crucial for injury prevention. We’ve invested in the physiotherapy side, sports science, and all of this is to help the playing squad and management team to almost want for nothing.

“Everything is designed to help the team go forward in what we do behind the scenes. We’re not making a big fuss of it but the players can see it and appreciate it.

“When players come here from other clubs and see the training facilities and the facilities we’ve got to assist them they are pleasantly impressed compared to other clubs. We’ve got a great set-up, it’s all about making sure we’ve got a really good infrastructure.”

Morgan says investment will continue in the Academy, but accepts it’s impossible to produce a homegrown team.

“I think the days of being able to produce a whole team from your Academy are well and truly gone,” he said.

“But I strongly believe in the Academy and believe it’s something which the club is very keen to develop.”
