Mowbray hails his flexible friend

mowbray2.jpegAlbion manager Tony Mowbray has labelled Jonathan Greening as his ‘flexible friend’ and hinted the captain may be moved from central midfield during the season.

Mowbray believes Greening could be deployed in a range of positions in the Premier League campaign, after nailing down a place at the heart of the team during last season’s Championship triumph.

The boss said: “In my mind Jonathan brings versatility to my team and I do see him, sometimes this season, playing on the wing and not in centre-midfield.

“Sometimes he could play behind a striker, or in a sitting role where he can dictate the game.

“Ultimately, I hope to have enough players in the squad when the window shuts, so we have lots of different options.

“Jonathan is another player with the quality required to play at this level and the quality to play in different positions in our team.

“I’m delighted he’s part of our set-up and I’m sure he’s looking forward to the challenge of the Premier League. Hopefully, it will be a better season than the last time we were in this league.

“I see Jonathan as a top player and a very high-class footballer. He still wants to learn, as we all do, and I include myself in that. We’ve got a journey to go and we’ve got to learn as we go along.

“The Premier League is somewhere where we want to be competitive every week and picking up victories along the way.”

Personally prefer JG to play in the middle. In pre-season he has controlled games from there but out on the wing he dwells on the ball.

    Definately Premiership quality though.

Greening was a far better player last year, partially owing to the fact that he played regularly in central midfield. His poorest games in the past were when he played out wide – he would often try to beat the same player several times, and his crossing was rubbish. We already have Brunt, Morrison and even McDonald who can play wide midfield. I hope that Mowbray does not waste one of last season’s more inspirational players by playing him out of position.

Jesus has improved so much as a player since Mogga came into the club.
He was always a good player, but the extra responsibility he’s been given has made him more of an influence to the team and he’s been a great success. He never makes lots of headlines because he performs at a constant good level week in / week out, and is extremely under rated outside the club.
The only thing I’d say is that if he does start playing out wide again…..once you’ve beaten your man, CROSS THE BALL, don’t try to beat him again, then again, then again…..please!

I think ToMo has a few players who can swich positions – players like Cech, Clements, morrison ect will all offer options, and Jonno could well do the same.

I like the way ToMo is constantly looking at ways to improve the team, and versatility is a key.

I think that greening is better in the middle his best position. And did not jump ship like all the others last season and for that won more of the baggies faithfulls hearts. A quailty player with all that is needed for the premiership with Brunt on the left wing that is covered with his Quailty left foot need one on the right.
Anyway all the best for the season baggies
    Boing Boing.

Texeira will be back soon enough and will make that wide position his, no need to move Jonno from the middle.

The most important thing TM changed about JG’s game was NOT to pass back to goalkeepers who can’t kick straight, ie, most of them! My heart used to sink into my boots when he even looked at the goalie. Now he’s almost the complete midfielder and we are privileged to have him in our team. He may yet get an England call up.

If greening plays as well as he did last season and the players around him do the same we will have no trouble staying up
