Flyover bridge work is delayed

Wednesday 13th August 2008, 10:52AM BST.

The transformation of Wolverhampton’s landmark wishbone bridge could be delayed again after bosses today admitted no date had yet been set for the work.

The refurbishment of the flyover across St George’s Ring Road had been due to start this month following years of campaigns by critics who have branded it an “embarrassing eyesore”.

Councillors claim the rundown structure over the tram lines, which was originally 10 years ago created as a statement of regeneration in the city, gives a bad first impression of Wolverhampton due to its flaking paintwork and broken lighting.

Today there were concerns the ongoing saga could drag on for months longer after Travel Midland Metro bosses confirmed that no date had yet been set.

The revamp was originally due to completed before Christmas last year, but freezing temperatures prevented the project going ahead as planned. It was then pushed back to spring, and then summer.

Springvale councillor Malcolm Gwinnett said the delay was “disgusting”.

I don’t remember it being that cold? If so, maybe for one or two days. But to put this off for 9 months – surely that’s a bit excessive.

    Waste of space.

How come the bosses at Metro are advertising it being carried out from the end of August right through September then? They’re stopping the trams and for once it’s well advertised all over the tram stops and the trams too.
What’s going on then? is it or isn’t it being done?

It is an eyesore full stop. Why repaint it? The sensible thing is to lower the tramway to run beneath the road. This stupid design sees the trams climb a hill to reach road level and then descend again. They could, instead, use a lesser incline to pass through the enchanted gardens of the roundabout.
