Jones warning against cup minnows
Tuesday 12th August 2008, 11:42AM BST.
Wolves fan Daniel Jones is aiming to make the most of his chance against Accrington Stanley tonight after admitting the League Two side will be “in our faces.”
Jones is set to start tonight’s first round tie, as boss Mick McCarthy rings the changes from Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Plymouth.
The 22-year-old warns his team-mates have to guard against complacency, following the 3-1 exit to Morecambe last year.
He said: “It would be massive for me to play in the first team again. For McCarthy to say a couple of the younger players will play, shows he’s going to give people a chance to impress.
“If I start or come off the bench, I’ll be giving 110 per cent. I’ve played at Molineux under lights before and it’s brilliant, something you want to do all the time.
“They will be everywhere about us and in our faces – they play in red and all you’ll see is red shirts.
“You’ve got to deal with that and hopefully our ability will shine through.
“I was actually playing for Northampton against Millwall the night of the Morecambe game. When the result came through I was shocked, because I’d been expecting a big win for Wolves, as you would do.
“It happens in football. Who would have expected Cardiff to get to the FA Cup final last season?
“I should hope the lads were guarding against complacency even before the Morecambe game.
“We played Stafford last week and automatically a fan would say: ‘We should hammer these’.
“That’s not necessarily the case because it’s their cup final. They will be playing out of their skin and trying their hardest to get one over on us.
“Players marking you want to make sure we don’t go anywhere, because they will want to leave their mark and make an impression.
“But we’ve got the ability and the players to beat them.”

This lad is quality, I hope he gets his chance this season instead of being farmed out to crappy Northampton all the time.

The reason we did so well in MM’s first season is because he gave Little, Jones and Gobern chances to prove themselves and they all did exceptionally.

Along with so many other Wolves fans, I really wish Dan (and the team of course) the very best for tonight. I hope he has a terrific game and brings himself into the reckoning – for us, not Northampton.
Good luck Daniel!! Hoping you’ll become a regular in the first team.
How does he prove to MM that he is superior to S Ward?
My only worry is (and its not a real worry, if you know what i mean) what happens if Vokes get a hat-trick tonight? Would he start on Sat? We know what MM is like and he’ll prob’ go back to Keogh … so im sure Vokes will be left thinking “regardless what i do the gaffer doesnt see me as a 1st teamer”
Hyperthetical but you get what i mean!!

HOPEFULLY NOT THE SAME WARNINGS THEY WERE GIVEN BEFORE THE MORCOMBE GAME LAST SEASON.
LOVE TO SEE DJ PLAY TONIGHT..BUT STILL FEAR THAT USELESS NUMPTY STEPHEN WARD WILL RESIGN HIM TO THE BENCH.
A GOOD POINT AT PLYMOUTH..AND A WIN TONIGHT..OOH NEWBRIDGE AND NIGEWOLF WILL NEED TO GET A ROOM HOW EXCITED THEY’LL BE..LMAO

MM is a pragmatic man, he likes hard workers and strong team players, if Vokes stood on the goal line and tapped 3 in he perhaps won’t start but if he scored one and made two others…he would.
That’s the way he thinks, FE he said contributed less to the team than AK which is why AK started ahead of FE last season.

Lets hope some of the lads playing tonight give McCarthy a real selection headache for saturday (which i’m sure is what he’ll be after as well), I think will also keep the first teamers in their toes and stop complacency setting in

better than s ward on the wing easy
Report abuse
Be good to see Jones play as a full back. I think he is much more likely to make the grade in this position than as a midfield player.

#3 Agree with everything you said.Players like Dan are the future of the club.Get him in the first team or we’ll end up losing him at the end of this season.

We should be playing Little tonight, but have already indicated that Foley will play. I would go with :-
Ikeme, Foley, Stearman, Craddock, Jones, Gray, Potter, Edwards, Jarvis, Iwelumo, Vokes
subs: Hennessey, Little, S Ward, Elokobi, Rosa
Report abuse
I think DJ should play. He cannot be worse than Ward, although in his defence he is a forward, not a winger.
Hopefully Collins & Elokobi sit this one out too & we should get a result

2. Jones played 8 and Gobern didn’t play that much, Little played the most, Reason we did so well was because of the January signings everybody knows that.
Hopefully we’ll see tonight just how superior Jones is to Ward.
I just don’t understand how the fans disliked Elliot so he is transfer listed same pretty much goes for D. Ward and Potter, However no one is a big S.Ward fan yet MM won’t transfer list or loan him out. How can he be ahead of Jones, Jarvis and Gray.
I don’t think it really matters how well/how many we score tonight MM will still pick the team that played against Plymouth on Saturday Providing that 11 arn’t injured by then.

Play Dan Jones tonight and then keep him in the team, he is as good as any of the others. We need more local lads playing for the club, not more of these “Ive come for an easy pay day types”. Buying new players season after season, has not worked for Wolves, the club needs an effective local youth development policy and build for the long term, not constant quick fix signings.
Good luck tonight Dan Jones (if he picks you !)

Are you all excited??? Massive game, win this and the ‘BIG’ teams are up next!!!! ha ha ha ha ha…
Hope you get stuffed.

Mark Little is injured…
I wish some ‘fans’ would read the news and read who’s actually injured rather than say stupid things like “so and so should start”

17 – stick to your own boards. Concentrate on coming up with excuses ready for Arsenal stuffing you on Saturday.
My fantasy football team is packed with Arsenal players and Adebayor as captain for double points.
Rob (13) Bet you a pound he wont play Little MM knows the scouts from championship teams are looking at him – you watch he’ll give Jones a run out to show what a nice man he is and then put him back in the non existant reserve team/ and he will be gone.
(16) Well said notice how the academy training team has got fed up and left?

Good Luck Daniel-Will watch and report–CD

19 – how ironic that you called yourself “not even 19th – when you are” !!
Yes I know for you the premiership is just “fantasy” football – but the fact that your team is “packed with Arsenal players” just shows how limited you are when discussing the league.
We will have to play them in a real game – and we will probably lose that one (they are a great team) – but at least we are there and not just filling a form in in The Sun.

If Ward has to start let him start as a striker otherwise confine him to the bench as a striker back up. Definately play Dan Jones and Micky Gray give Elokobi a rest. I though SEB and Keogh were poor on saturday so I would play one of them half a game with either Vokes or Iwelumo then swap them round a bit and try another partnership. This should determine which are our best two up front for tonight at least. He has to keep playing Stearman and Craddock at the back tonight because they need to start gelling and tonight will be a another opportunity for them to do this
Don’t really know what to say about Ward, he wants to play but then so would I. However he is our worst winger (well he’s a striker played as a winger) and should be fourth down the pecking order for that position. Kightly also will not play tonight (sore ankle) so we have no natural right winger unless he plays Gobern. Wolves site does not have him out on loan, anyone know any different?

Best of luck Daniel, we’ll all be rooting for you!

Good luck Daniel, hope you get to start.

My main concern is we needlessly play a first teamer tonight and they pick up a long term injury
Report abuse
(18) actually mod – Little Isnt injured – perhaps you should check your facts before you call people stupid – this is a forum for debate ive got more respect for a persons opinion right or wrong even if i dont agree with them perhaps you should do the same.
Starting line up should be:
GK:Ikeme
RB:Little
CB:Craddock (CB’s need to gel)
CB:Stearmen
LB:Gray
RM:Jarvis
CM:Davies
CM:Edwards
LM:D.Jones
ST:Vokes
ST:Iwelumo
No point risking injuries plus we’ve got to give other players a chance.
Little won’t leave cuz we’re one of the best teams in da league and he can still prove himself to mm.
D.Jones should be at least on the bench week in week out and be given 20 to 30 mins every game ..
He is a cracking player at lb or lm !!
THERE’S ONLY ONE DAN JONES .. DAN JONES !!

7. Is your caps lock button broken? So far every time you speak you write in capitals, it doesn’t make it stand out, just makes you look like an incredible tool. Try talking normally and maybe people will value your opinion.

p.s. are those empty seats I can see?

Id give Stearman a run tonight, just about his level. Another £1m wasted, at least he’ll fit in with all your other Donkeys.
Saying that, ill think you will have a good season and, without injuries, should make 8th or 9th.

6. I thought exactly the same thing about Vokes. But to be fair Keogh and SEB would be my first choice for the weekend regardless of what Vokes does tonight.
Come on you Wolves!

We seem to lose this tie every year. In fact since 1980 when we won it we’ve really struggled. Come on WOlves!

1-0 to stanley @ half time.HO DEAR!!!

Wow! We held ourselves to a draw against the mighty Accrington Stanley!
It is exciting to see how Wolves has progressed under the super-excellent management of one of the World’s leading International managers.
Please stop this farce!

The team managed a 1-1 draw with the mighty Accrington Stanley.
How low do we have to sink?
For God’s sake get rid of Moxy and McCarthy and get a professional management team installed here, not these two failed chancers!

33 – Are you are a real wolves fan? 2 games into a new season and all you’re interested in doing is moaning about the club and the set up.
Early round league cup games are, despite what you may think a cup final for lower opposition. This is’nt our first choice 11 and in any case what the hell has it to do with Moxey – when did he start picking the team? IMO he has turned this club around from being dependant on a wealthy benefactor to shoring up our finances.
Anyway, we’ve won 3-2…..but I suppose progression to the next round aint good enough for you?
yet again played out of position at left midfielder it should be a choice of elokobi or dan jones at left back
