Ikeme ready to return to Stanley
Tuesday 12th August 2008, 12:57PM BST.
Carl Ikeme is hoping for a rare start against Accrington Stanley tonight – to give him a painful reminder of the club who helped him grow up.
The Wolves keeper has cut an impressive figure in pre-season, after finally recovering from a string of injuries to share the goalkeeping duties with Wayne Hennessey.
If he plays tonight, the 22-year-old will be revisiting a small chunk of his past which he admits shaped his future.
For Accrington was where it all started for Ikeme, who spent a month on loan there between October and November of 2004.
Getting his first taste of senior action at Stanley, Ikeme made four appearances for the Lancashire side, keeping two clean sheets, but the memories weren’t all pleasant!
He said: “I had a spell on loan there when I was 18. They were in the Conference at the time. It was my first taste of senior football and it was a bit of a culture shock to be honest.
“My first game was away to Aldershot and it was a tough day!
“In the first minute, I was involved in a collision with their centre forward which left me a bit worse for wear for the rest of the game.
“I got hit in the private parts so you can imagine I was in a bit of pain and I’ve got painful memories of my first match!
“It was an old-style ground with the fans tight to the pitch, but it was a good experience.
“I was only there for a month so I didn’t really get a feel for the club. But it’s a good club and if selected it would be good to play against them.”
In the current days of pampered stars who have everything done for them, the spell in Lancashire taught Ikeme about a different side to the game, that has helped him appreciate the comparative luxury of life at Molineux.
He said: “Training was basically on the local park and I went there in the winter, so you can imagine that going further up north, it was colder than Wolverhampton.
“It didn’t go a day without raining, so it wasn’t great but it didn’t really bother me, because I’m not too big not to go to a club like that and learn.
“It’s a normal part of your development and the football is the main thing, to make sure I keep going in the right direction so I’m thankful for them for that.
“I only trained there twice a week but think they were full-time. You go there and you realise how lucky you are to be at a club like Wolves.
“I went there and came back thinking I’m going to do my best to make sure I don’t play Conference football.
“It’s a good level – you have to look at players such as Michael Kightly who have come from there.
“‘Kites’ was playing in that league two years ago but now he could play in the Premier League. So there are good players in that league.
Ikeme is looking forward to re-acquainting himself with some of his brief team-mates, as well as long-serving manager John Coleman, who took him to the Fraser Eagle Stadium.
He added: “I was only there for a month, so I wasn’t really there long enough to bond with the players, although I’ve noticed some of the names from their games are the same.
“I think there are at least four or five players still there from my time. It was quite a long time ago so things have changed quite a lot.”
Also in the Wolves camp, striker Chris Iwelumo has revealed how he and strike partner Sam Vokes are plotting their assualton Accrington – from the dinner table at their hotel.
The pair – set to be unleashed from the start for the first time in a competitive game tonight – are settled in the same accommodation.
Iwelumo said: “We’re in the same hotel at the moment so we eat together most nights. If he wants to ask me anything he can.
“Have I given him advice? You’re making me feel old! He knows he can talk to me about anything and we’re open with each other.
“He’s got a lot of talent and has definitely shown that so long may that continue.
“He got a bit aggressive with that goal celebration so we might have to have a word there! I was delighted for him.”
The former Stoke, Charlton and Colchester striker is keen to get that first win on the board after Saturday’s 2-2 opener at Plymouth.
He said: “For the team there were positives and negatives.
“We did enough to win and the goals we gave away weren’t the best, but we can focus on putting that right.
“It’s a learning thing but we don’t want to make too many mistakes before we get our first win on the board.
“We had to push in the second half because we were 2-1 down, but we’ve got good players so we knew the chances were going to come.
“‘Stacky’ pulled a few saves out that he probably shouldn’t have but that’s a positive we can take out.”
Probable teams.
Wolves (4-4-2): Ikeme; Foley, Stearman, Collins, Daniel Jones; Gray, Potter, D Edwards, Jarvis; Iwelumo, Vokes.
Accrington (4-4-2): Arthur; Cavanagh, Murdock, P Edwards, King; Miles, Craney, J Mullin, Grant; P Mullin, Clarke.

Just make sure you put a good shift in for Mick.
Good to see Ward rested for his guaranteed start on the left wing on Saturday. Shocking.

It will be Great to see him have a run out. He has always been a gent at Wolves and never whinged about the lack of first team football. In another team he would be first choice but for Carl unfortunately Murray and Hennessey have always shone.

We’ll have to score 2 if ‘penalty’ Collins is playing.

The Wolves website says Mark Davies isn’t injured, so why the hell play a transfer listed player tonight in Potter, ahead of him?!

so we can sell the duffer
up the wolves

Anything other than a comfortable win is unthinkable. If we are genuine promotion contenders we have to win with style. I’m concerned about the Ward/Jarvis thing, I expect Jarvis to shine tonight but doubt it will get him in the starting eleven on Saturday. MM has his reasons and if we prosper we will accept it, if we falter he will either have to explain or take the flack.

Who cares about the carling cup? Let’s just concentrate on the league!!

ikeme would get a 1st team start in many other teams, deserves any chance he gets.
re davies i have to agree with wolf are we going to have the same baffling team slections and tactics as last season. i.e jarvis/ s ward ???
also stuuey it may be the carling cup winning games gains confidence and if we have a 2nd string that can step up if needed then it is all steps in the right direction.

Where is Mark Davies????

Wolf….it is shop window time before the permanent transfer window closes.
With no reserve team fixtures this season, we started the summer break with 14 wages which needed to be offloaded, either as permanent transfers, or long term loans.
Very few of those 14 have gone to date.

7 – I take it you arn’t going then…………….
Will be a fun game tonight, I dont think it will be a walk over at all but will be amusing to watch us play them.

Its good to see a second string play, we don’t need to over exert Jarvis and the like, I know there’s arguments for and against on the cup run debate but Potter needs to play to show his prospective new club what he can do. We don’t need to go far in the cup so lets concentrate on the league and let someone else worry about the cup. Up the Wolves

A quality keeper. There is no club in England that has the goalkeeping talent that we have got. To think Albion have spent over £3million on someone who is not as good as any of these!
Bob Wolf, is there no pleasing you? Ward in – you moan, Ward out – you still moan. Give it a rest!!

13.
What a handicap, Brummie & Dingle, I don’t
know what to say,
good luck against the mighty Accrington Stanley.
13 – what are you on ?
Ikeme has made how many appearances ?.. 1 – But to you he is a “quality keeper” – how ?
Murray – great keeper – but will not play 10 games a season.
Hennesey – good prospect but even wolves fans admit he has some basic flaws.
Scott Carson aint the best keeper in the world – but he is proven at top level (unlike ANY of the above), he’s 22, and he will, like Hennesey, get better.
Don’t expect you to agree but i don’t think I’m far off the truth.

C’mon me babbbiiiieees!
A good result tonight will be just the tonic to get the season moving!
NB* Had hoped S Ward would be given a chance in his normal position – striker! ;-)

why are we even bothering with the cup who cares surely there has got tobe only one ambition this year and that is to win the league!!!!!!!!
you make me laugh none of our keepers as good as youres when we have two full internationals!! and the futture england goalkeeper on our books you wolfies should stop worrying about us and start worrying about youreselves!!!!!!

Mark Davies ?
Oh the overated kid who is the second coming of the “welsh” messiah for you dingles LOL
Report abuse
13,rummiewilf, your right mate i wish we had waleses no2 instead of englands no1 all the best keepers play in the championship dont they aye boing boing
Report abuse
makes sense to play potter if mick wants him out.(shop window)…but why collins?? penalty practice for ikeme ?? the chap is a a new breed of donkey. surely its wiser to play stearman alongside craddock again for them to gel more as it seems mick has settled on them,a clean sheet(loff loff)would do them magic!! accrington stanley?? who are they!!
Rather keep Potter and get rid of Henry,as for Davies him and Mick had a falling out last season which has’nt been resolved.Agree about Ikeme, great lad and would be in goal if had’nt got the best English and Welsh keepers in the land.Lets all get behind Mick and the lads and well see the best of them, have a go an watch them fall apart.
brummie nob wolves ,dont worry about how much were spending on players, when was the first or last time you spent 3mil on 1 player, youre whole team probably cost less.
your doing well your holding on,aye boing boing
Report abuse
No 6 (Magician) -when do we ever have comfortable wins against anyone???
I have a feeling that when the dust settles and we are playing well and not conceding many goals and everyone is happy then the central partnership will be Collins and Stearman – unless we actually buy a better player.
you just couldent hang on till half time cud ya,aye boing boing

Against the mighty Accrington Stanlay we luckily forced a draw!
How low do we have to sink before the Happy Clappers and Morgan realize that the chancers Moxey and McCarthy are just expensive serial failures.
Get rid of them NOW!

22.lofiinatwulfs, think we paid 3 mill for k miller and 3.5 mill for ade akinbiyi who we sold for 5 mill so there’s two examples for you you pathetic albion t#sser. think you’re big time now you’ve spent 3 mill on that idiot who lets the ball slip through his fingers.oh and we spent that in the championship not in the prem like you tight arses. you’ll be needing a good keeper cus you aint signed nothin else and lost 3 of your best players oh well at least i’ll be able to have a good loff on m.o.t.d.
