Plymouth 2 Wolves 2

Saturday 9th August 2008, 3:57PM BST.

plymouth.jpegThe latest news from Home Park as Mick McCarthy’s men kick off their Championship campaign.

16.37: Sub Sam Vokes, on for Ebanks-Blake three minutes earlier, scores for Wolves.

16:33: Ebanks-Blake foiled from three yards by a great save from Stack. Subsequent corner sees Elokobi miss a point-blank header, with Stack pulling off a double save to deny Ebanks-Blake on the rebound.

16: 31: Stearman fouled into the area, referee waves away appeals for the penalty.

16:24: Striker Andy Keogh replaced by Chris Iwelumo, with Jarvis replacing Ward.

16:22: Kightly’s dipping effort has goalkeeper Graham Stack backpeddling to tip over.

16:12: Corner in falls to the unmarked Marcel Seip in the area and he connects to guide the ball past Hennessey. 2-1.

16:02: Second-half kicks off.

15:47: Half-time whistle is blown.

15:45: Fans call for Matt Jarvis to replace left-winger Stephen Ward, who is failing to give left-back George Elokobi the right amount of cover.

15.44: Doumbe fouls Ebanks-Blake. The free kick is taken right-footed by Kightly and punched by Graham Stack.

15.39: Keeper Stack drops a high ball on the goal line but the assistant referee says had earlier crossed the dead ball line. Doumbe heads over Hennessey’s goal from 12 yards.

15.34: Jones fires over from 30 yards.

15.29: Hennessey punches a Plymouth corner.

15.27: Wolves are leading possession now in what is proving an entertaining game, says our man at the game. Ebanks-Blake almost silences the home crowd with a left footed drive from distance which goes over Stack’s goal. Albion are one-nil down at home to Mallorca in their pre-Premier League season friendly, by the way.

15:19: Michael Kightly picks up the ball dropping into the area and lashes a volley into the net. 1-1. A typical bit of Kightly magic, says our man at the ground. The winger had been booked shortly before hand.

15.16: It was the “worst possible start” for Wolves after an impressive pre-season, says our man at the ground. The home team’s tails are up. A similar chance to the goal causes problems for Wolves but the defence manage to clear.

15.10: Plymouth score on seven minutes. Stearman fails to deal with a long ball and Fallon nips in to score past the advancing Hennessey.

15.06: Any tme a certain Wolves striker goes near the ball, boos ring out around Home Park. No prizes for guessing who is the target for the home fans’ groans.

15.05: Some Wolves fans are bullish about their chances today. jean-piere micallef says: “wolves will win 2-0 today.ebanks and iwelumo to score!!”

15.00: We’re off! The season is under way.

14.45: New for this season of Sporting Star – our reporters will be bringing you video reports throughout the day. Tim Nash gets us off the mark from Home Park. Let us know your feedback and stay logged on to Expressandstar.com for plenty of new features: Plymouth Argyle v Wolves – team news

14.35: Team news is in: Plymouth Argyle v Wolves – team news

14.30: Sporting Star is back after the summer break. Is it really three months since Wolves’ play-off hopes were dashed at home to Plymouth? There is a chance to get a positive start when the two sides meet again in Plymouth today. Mick McCarthy kicked off the countdown to Wolves’ curtain-raiser at Plymouth earlier this week by insisting any abuse coming Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s way “won’t bother him a jot”. Wolves fans – get those comments in.

lets face it from what i heard we were POOR but still got a point better than we got first game of last season!!
defense looked shaky (we need another CB) but look at the difference normally if the front two dont score we are get nothing, but we took off both our 1st choice strikers off and the two who came on changed the game for us and got us something, cant remember the last time that happened??

“Sam Vokes plays a one-two with Chris Iwelumo before slotting home”.

Who knows, if either of them had had longer on the pitch they might have slotted one or two more home. I cannot understand the logic of persisting with players (Keogh and Ward) who didn’t do well enough last year when there are new (Vokes/Iwelumo) or better (Jarvis) players who should be given their chance while they are fresh and eager to play.

You’re right. We should have got three first game last season and after the match Mick said something like there was nothing to worry about, it was how we did over 46 games that mattered. Ultimately, those points cost us the playoffs. Let’s hope we don’t miss by two points or less this year.

rubbish result really, but promising partnership with Vokes and Iwelumo. I don’t think we’ll struggle with Strikers this season.

Dodgy defense, whats up with Craddock? The most experienced player we’ve got and he sounded terrible.

Conditions as they were don’t help but please Mick get a centre half in with some pace and awareness and play Jarvis instead of Ward.

Most fans already seem to have picked up on the basic flaws missed by our management.

Playing a striker on the wing is perhaps less effective than playig a winger on the wing. If you don’t believe in the existing winger, then sign one you do have faith in.

Letting defenders leave the club and not signing any experienced replacements will most likely result in a weaker defence.

All that said, it was the first match of the season and snap judgements are something we Wolves fans are ever so guilty of.

Many positives to be taken from the match, not least of all the fact we managed to avoid defeat at an away match on opening day.

    Here’s to another rollercoaster season.

Here we go another start and everyone complaining.
A draw away from home is a good start for any team. How would you all feel if we lost at home to Doncaster as per the Rams.
Support Mick and the guys that we have especially at home otherwise supporters will be our own worst enemy. Also, take a look at the PAFC official web site and you will read unbiased articles and they were happy to get a point.
Last season you critised Breen yet some of you shout for his recall!!
To fight back twice was a great achievement and remember we have no divine right to get automatic promotion. We were but are no longer ‘the big time charlies’.
Yes the defence sounds a problem but none of the Championship teams have a great defence and even some of you were calling for Collins to be introduced. Come on, in your eyes all we did was give the bloke stick all the time last season
We saw today the importance of a squad and even the chubby SEB being substituted. Support MM and if things are not going well by Xmas yes of course he will be out and replaced by Ince because unfortunately he has have bitten off more than he can chew.
This season is a marathon not a 100 yard sprint.
Wolves fans have a shameful reputation of not supporting their team enough unless they are winning and top of the league.
My prediction is a top six spot but there again many will see that as failure.
Home support is the key and booing players is just childish behaviour.
Get behind them all the time against Sheff Wed and watch out for Leon Clarke, a wounded animal can be very dangerous.
Take care guys from a Wolves supporter of more than 40 years at present based in Seoul – South Korea. My surname is Wagstaff withouT an E and many of you will the remember the great waggy with an E ‘for excellance, entertaining and excitement.
Keep supporting our team and the manager. – Korean Wolf
