Wolves appoint new goalie coach

Wolves’ new goalkeeping coach is UEFA ‘A’ licence holder and former Wales under-21 coach Pat Mountain.
The 32-year-old – one of the youngest to achieve both outfield and goalkeeping elements of the top qualification – takes up his first full-time role to replace Bobby Mimms after leaving Cheltenham.
Mountain has spent the last four seasons at Whaddon Road, where he divided his time between there and Hereford.
The former Cardiff keeper’s professional career was ended by three major operations on his left knee at 27. Mountain did play over 200 games for Newport County and is delighted with his new role.
He said: “Cheltenham gave me an opportunity but when the chance to move to a club as big as Wolves came along. With the opportunity to work with three goalkeepers as good as we’ve got here – I couldn’t turn it down.
Mimms, who joined Blackburn, leaves a legacy after assembling arguably the greatest array of goalkeeping talent in the club’s history. Mountain believes he can fill the gap.
He said: “The idea is to keep them motivated, improve them and keep them playing consistently well. Having done one session with them, they look like a good group of lads to work with.”
Boss Mick McCarthy added: “Pat is well qualified. He came in on Monday and did a good session with the lads.”

Still think Mimms should of stayed one more season, great chance of going up this year. Paul Robinson will need at least 10 Bobby Mimms’ the way he’s going.

Totally unrelated comment to the article – MM stated in testerdays article on Ian Harte turning down the short term contract offered to him that Neil Collins and Richard Stearman can play at left back – I found this quite alarming as Neil Collins is the worst fullback I have ever seen and Stearman is our only decent centrehalf. I was never a big Rob Edwards fan but surely he was a better utility defender that Collins? Lets hope big George doesn’t get injured!!!

A good group of lads to work with? I should imagine any goalkeeping coach would be hard pushed to find better talent in one club than we have at Wolves!

personally i cant see how all the credit for our 3 superb keeper went to mimms anyway- at best he was an average keeper- murray hennesey and ikeme would be top quality with or without mimms- praise must surely go to the scouts who found these guys and the academy setup

i was at the academy and wanted to bring in Tom Huddlestone some 6 years ago . Tony Lacey refused him said we had enough midfielders. Look at him now .

(16) As a former goalkeeper, you don’t need one. You’ve either got it or you ain’t regarding the basic skills.
Positional skills are developed and honed from playing games at progressively higher levels.
The only actual training (as opposed to coaching) you need is to maintain your fitness levels and reaction time.
The only actual coaching you may need is if you are a carp kicker.

You don’t need one to have natural talent. But to hone your skills? Of course you do, you can learn alone but if you have a good teacher your improvement ends up a lot more marked. Saying that is like saying you don’t need to be coached as an outfield player either if you’re good already then you learn from playing. But I’m sure Tony Adams would disagree with you after working with Wenger!

17 Beg to differ – Sharpness, Agillity etc can be practiced and making keepers dive and retrieve a bag of footballs is a fantastic aid to sharpness
5 a side games also help with shot stopping
As the old saying goes “practice makes perfect” , but dont tell MM that! ;-)

13 Chris Evans spotted Hennessey when he was at Man Citeh – Neville Southall recommended him to Evans the rest is history
