Gunman arrested in station drama
Tuesday 5th August 2008, 11:45AM BST.
A gun-wielding man was arrested at Wolverhampton’s city centre train station by armed police officers as cafe customers watched in horror.
Passengers reported hearing the man, who was middle-aged and wearing a suit, talking on his mobile phone about wanting to shoot someone. He was arrested after being wrestled to the ground by officers has he sat among diners in the Lemon Tree cafe.
The drama unfolded at around 1.30pm yesterday when police received reports of a man walking around the station carrying a firearm.
One witness, who did not want to be named, went to the cafe to get a sandwich.
She said: “I walked past a man who was sitting talking on his mobile. There were police officers on the platform and two seemed to almost follow me into the cafeteria. They walked over to the man and wrestled him to the ground and arrested him. It was really scary.”
The woman added a fellow customer said she had heard the man talking on his mobile about wanting to shoot someone.
“I kept thinking about the fact I had been completely in the line of fire,” she added.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said today that the man had been in possession of a “low-level” firearm.
