Mick is the man – Moxey

Monday 4th August 2008, 12:27PM BST.

Wolves chief executive Jez MoxeyWolves boss Mick McCarthy has been handed a ringing endorsement of his qualities as he prepares for the new season.

Fans in the South Bank rose again to salute the Molineux chief with chants of ‘Super Mick McCarthy,’ during the second half of Saturday’s 4-2 win over Blackburn.

Rovers boss Paul Ince, who was pipped by McCarthy for the Wolves job two years ago to signal the end of his four-year stay at Molineux, was also given a tremendous reception when he stood in the technical area for the second-half.

Supporters chanted ‘Incey is a Wolves fan. Despite Ince reaching the Premier League as a manager before Wolves, chief executive Jez Moxey insists the club would still have made the same decision.

He said: “We wish Paul well but despite his immediate impact at managerial level, we would still have made exactly the same decision in appointing Mick.

“At the time Mick’s credentials were first class, as they still are now. We remain extremely pleased with the job he has done and the way the squad has developed over the last two years.

“It’s not only Mick’s football managerial abilities that endeared him to us but his other personal qualities too, qualities that perhaps many people don’t outwardly see.

“Mick has so many positive attributes that, in my opinion, sets him apart from many other managers in the game, to the extent that I have never been more comfortable in the choice we made two years ago.”

Moxey believes Ince has a different challenge to prove himself as a top flight manager after success at Macclesfield and MK Dons.

He said: “There is no doubting Paul’s abilities as a player but going into the Premier League where the standard is so high will show how good he is as a manager.

“I went on record at the time to say how impressed we had been with Paul’s interview for the Wolves job. We just felt he needed to cut his managerial teeth at a lower level before landing such a major position.

“He has done that to impressive effect fully deserving his Premier League chance at Blackburn, where he has to follow the success of Mark Hughes.”

Oh god – thats three “aint we great” articles in one day (so far) on here !!

No wonder the expectation and pressure is so intense at wolves – you build yourselves up too high every season…

You have had decent pre season and brought a couple of good prospects – but lets not have the “up by xmas” and “Merlin mick” nonsense that set you all up last season.

Surely you learned the lesson last time…. ??

MM got a “Vote of Confidence” and a clean slate from most fans on Sat BUT MM has to try and use more common sense than to make remarks about “not caring what anyone thinks” etc as mentioned in another thread today or again be up against the fans again if he fails this season – just keep it shut and get on with it MM – these type of comments will only wind up the fans

Moxey is being his usual self and trying to latch unto Saturdays performance to sell more tickets – great win – good pre season warm ups; but as per usual with Moxey a tad premature – lets see where we are by October/ Christmass period first

Now lets get down to what matters most – winning games in the league and maybe getting a couple more quality players in – a centre half with pace and maybe someone who can add competition/ experience to the midfield

I agree that there is much to be optimistic about and despite being convinced that Moxey made the wrong decision 2 years ago, wish Mick all the success going this season.

When things are going well, it’s easy being Manager and, for that matter, Chief Executive. If things don’t go so well…and that’s particularly the case at Wolves…the true test of managerial ability is how you respond.

Last season, Mick alienated a large section of the fans, alienated his star player, let go his best defender only to have to recall him, played players out of position, presided over dull match after dull match, plumbed new depths in journalistic comment and came across as though he didn’t give a monkey’s.

Hopefully, we’ll coast along at the top of the table but if we don’t will be when we see if Mick deserves all the plaudits Jez gives him.

I have to say – painful as it is that Moxey has a point, and McCarthy has now said he was wrong to have a ‘POP’ back at the fans last season, but at the time what would you expect from a Manager – Sorry fans – we are playing Sh@t at the moment and i dont think the lads have got it in them to finish the season in a playoff place!!! Now what would that have done to the players – bottom line is he was protecting the good players we had, which is what the team needed else we’d be in all sorts of trouble now. At least were hearing that the lads are fit, now lets see what we have got, and dont get too carried away by a 4-2 win over blackburn – there hardly a top half the table prem team on there best day!!!

However, we still have to produce that sort of form when it matters most – starting next week with 3 points at Plymouth. The Championship will certainly not be settled by Christmas so I totally agree with you about anyone who is foolish enought to predict that. Note however that I would be more than happy (excuse the pun !!) to eat my words were it to happen !!
