Battler back at home after injury
Monday 4th August 2008, 6:03PM BST.
Just a few short months ago, Ryan Jeffs was lying sedated in a hospital bed after being struck by a car on one of the busiest roads into Wolverhampton.
Police feared the worst when the four-year-old was struck by a driver who then allegedly failed to stop at the scene. But today the young battler was back home with his mother and brothers and well on the road to recovery. The youngster was hit by a car in Bilston Road, near the Renault garage, as he walked home from Grove Primary School in All Saints.
Amazingly, he did not break a single bone in his body but he did suffer a head injury and was put under sedation.
He was later transferred from New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where his family kept vigil as he was given specialist treatment.
But he has now returned home and was happily playing with his brothers Mason, six, and Warren, six months, at home in Commercial Road, Horseley Fields, over the weekend.
His mother Kate, aged 29, said: “He’s not too bad now. He’s got to go back to hospital in October for a check to see how he is.”
She revealed that Ryan has no memory of the accident, which happened on April 17.
She said: “He thinks he hit his head on the bed and he gets upset quite a lot.”
Ryan had returned to school for half an hour to see his friends but is now enjoying the summer holidays.
Brother Mason said: “He likes painting. I was glad to have him back.”
The Jeffs family say they have been overwhelmed by the messages of support from well-wishers, and have thanked the emergency services who rushed to the youngster’s aid.
West Midlands Police said a 33-year-old man who was arrested is due to be summonsed for failing to stop following a collision and is due to appear before the city’s magistrates court.
It is thought that a date for the hearing has not yet been set.
