Walsall captain Paul Wicker insists tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash with leaders Barnt Green will not decide the outcome of the premier division title race.

The defending champions could be more than 50 points adrift of the Worcestershire outfit if they are beaten tomorrow, but Wicker does not believe the clash will make or break the season regardless of the result.

He said: “Obviously we don’t want Barnt Green to get too big a lead so it would not be great if we lost.

“I don’t think anything would be over whatever happens in this match. There would still be a lot of cricket to be played and we saw last year how things can change even late in the season.”

Wicker is staying positive, in the wake of last weekend’s final-over defeat to third-placed Himley.

He said: “If you are are going to lose a game then you want to lose as we did, fighting all the way, taking it to the last over and having your opponents nine wickets down.”

Wicker is forced into two changes tomorrow, with Andy Hawkins and Richard Mills replaced by Gareth Williams and Qadoos Rashid.

Ruki Da Silva will lead West Bromwich Dartmouth again against Kenilworth Wardens tomorrow – but they still have no new captain.

Vice-captain Da Silva will hold the reins again after being given the green light to continue in the wake of Harshad Patel’s resignation.

The Birmingham Road outfit will wait until their next committee meeting to discuss a long-term successor to the departed Patel.

Chairman Lawrence Sylvester said: “We haven’t made a decision yet. All I can say is that Ruki Da Silva is our vice-captain and he will lead the side until such time as the committee meet again to discuss things.”

Patel stepped down with his side struggling at the bottom of the table, after injury forced him to spend much of the season on the sidelines.

The club remain in the bottom two but the chairman believes they can still avoid relegation.

He said: “I think we have the team to get out of trouble if they play as they can.”

Kidderminster Victoria captain Jonathan Wright has labelled August as pivotal as his side target a top-four finish in the premier division.

Victoria’s title hopes were all-but ended last week by a losing draw to Kenilworth that saw them confirmed in mid-table.

Wright will order his side to forget the problems of recent weeks and refocus on their pre-season target of forcing their way into the top four.

He said: “We didn’t get the result we wanted last week and there is no getting away from that.

“We have to put that behind us now, because the next few weeks will be pivotal and could define our season.”

Wright is without the services of Andy Kimberlin against Moseley tomorrow so Mark Derrick returns.
