Monberg back at Monmore Green

speedway-2406.jpegWolves have completed the signing of former favourite Jesper B Monberg in time for Monday’s vital Elite League clash with Swindon at Monmore Green.

Monberg, formerly known as Jensen before adopting his wife’s maiden name, first joined the club in 1997– the year he won the World Under-21 crown – but failed to live up to his early promise.

He hasn’t raced in Britain this season but his form on the continent has started to pick up. He replaces injured German Christian Hefenbrock in the Parrys International Wolves team.

Last season saw him start the season at Oxford with a brief spell with Ipswich towards the end, before quitting British racing during the winter.

He said: “I was happy to miss out but it’s made me realise how much you miss regular racing.

“I had several conversations with Wolverhampton in July and now I feel ready to come back, not just to British racing but to Wolves in particular.

“I had some great times with them – winning the league in 2002 was brilliant – and I’m looking forward to coming back.

“I hope I can do well for them and help them pull clear of the foot of the table.”

Club owner Chris Van Straaten and the rest of the Wolves team are excited by the arrival of the cheerful Monberg.

He said: “Kenneth Hansen is good friends with Jesper. The move allows young Nicolai Klindt to stay at reserve, whilst Niels Kristian Iversen also knows Jesper well.

“We brought Jesper over as a youngster in 1997 and his career has turned full circle now he’s back with us.

“We’re confident he can do a good job and he should prove an improvement on Christian, which is what the move is about.

“He’s riding well, he’s through to the Grand Prix Challenge and at 30 years of age he’s in his prime.

“I’m sure he can improve the team, starting against Swindon on Monday.”
