Station casino scheme dropped
Thursday 31st July 2008, 11:40AM BST.
A casino development in Wolverhampton to transform the Low Level Station site has been axed at the 11th hour, the Express & Star can reveal today.
After two years’ restoration work at the former railway station, casino bosses have pulled out of the project.
Workers from Claremont Leisure were due to move in within days to transform the site with £6million worth of gambling machines, poker tables, Las Vegas-style fittings, mirrored walls and neon lights.
But the company has decided not to go ahead with the development, which regeneration chiefs had hoped would become an impressive landmark.
It is feared the newly renovated site could now sit derelict for months before its future is decided.
Jonathan Cox, of Oswin Developments which has restored the old station, said: “It is disappointing that this has happened.”
It is believed Claremont pulled out due to the economic downturn along with the fact that proposals to roll out a national chain of casinos had not gone to plan.
