Ray’s blog: The glory hunters
Thursday 31st July 2008, 3:19PM BST.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill has hopped off to Scotland this week, so taking the blogger mantle is Ray ‘Wbaforever’ Blood, who has a few words to say about the state of the game.
Firstly I would like to thank Expressandstar.com for the opportunity to write the blog in Jarrod’s absence, consequently allowing me to dust the cobwebs off my soapbox.
Apologies in advance, for what may seem to be a rather fragmented blog. I want to talk about a potentially worrying scenario and on a more light hearted note two things I find very irksome.
They may only be idiosyncratic to myself, but I suspect not. So here goes.
Whilst driving the other day, I was listening to Talksport radio, where they were discussing by the bosses of rugby’s Super League, to banish promotion and relegation for three year periods.
One of the presenters (whose name escapes me) suggested that the very same principle be adopted by football,
His assumption was that somewhere in the football corridors of power, this be given serious consideration. WHAT!
I don’t know where to begin with this, It is so wrong in so many ways.
The ramifications of such a mind-bogglingly ridiculous notion would surely mean the death knell, for an already ailing and greed driven industry.
Competition is what makes any sport a great spectacle, so such action would render competition pointless, to all but the chosen few. It would be solely their domain.
Occasionally, fans on these blogs, take a swipe at the E&S, for allegedly favouring one club over another, but at least we can read about our chosen team in some detail, not just a mini paragraph tucked in neatly next to the five for fun answers.
The trouble is with the national media, be it tabloid, broadsheet or TV, such as Sky Sports.
They have a Man Utd and Chelsea fixation. They must believe that every football fan in the country awaits with bated breath, for the next fascinating instalment to emanate from within those clubs.
Personally, what happens at Man Utd and Chelsea is a matter of supreme indifference to me. I am guessing I’m not alone.
Which brings me neatly on to my other little foible.
Man Utd and Chelsea fans and not the genuine ones, who really do support those teams, but the one’s we all see every day, in the streets pubs and shops.
The sum total of their support, is to purchase one of the 16 different shirts on offer and parade around the catwalks that are the streets of Walsall, proclaiming to anyone that cares to listen, their lifetime devotion to their chosen team (well lifetime since that season they supported Blackburn).
It is my suspicion, that if you gave one of these “fans” an atlas and asked him to point out on the map the location of Old Trafford, he would be searching feverishly somewhere adjacent to the Bristol Channel.
I know us Baggies and Wolves fans have our differences (understatement) but I have the utmost respect for any Wulfie, than these glory hunters.
Finally (good I hear you resonate), I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work Jarrod does compiling these blogs, I now fully appreciate the time and work it entails.
He does THREE a week, respect mate!!!
Good luck to ALL of our teams for the season ahead.

Good blog Ray, well-written and thought-provoking. Please be assured you are not alone in thinking that to effectively franchise the Premier League out to the highest 20 bidders would be another victory for the money-men in the game, as well as yet another kick in the collective nuts of you or I (or the vast majority of posters on this board) – ie the genuine fans. And whilst it sickens me to see so many Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal shirts on folk all over the country (and the world), I also take complete satisfaction from knowing that I am not, and never will be, a glory supporter. Well tell me this – how could someone be accused of glory hunting when they support the Wolves?!! This is why I will always give my respect to the supporters of clubs like WBA, Walsall, Kidderminster etc over the Man U or Chelsea fans any day of the week.

Nice one Forever.
I will now go and get my dictionary so I can get the meaning to some of them words…
Seriously you damn right with what you say, and to abolish Promotion/Relegation would ruin the game, this cannot and will not ever happen IMO.
Regarding the “GLORYHUNTING” supporters, i never class them as a football and I cannot hold myself in a true footballing conversation, as soon as I speak to someone and they tell me they are a Man U, Liverpool etc fan I tend to switch off, you notice how all these so called “gloryhunters” are season ticket holders or had a season ticket last year. My opinion what a load of balls.

i very much agree, ive been very fortunate in that ive been a baggie for the 28 years ive been around and never even though of straying, finding liverpool fans come out the wood work when they won the champions league really grated on me, i cannot understand y people support a team based on success – isnt the love of the game due to having gone through rollercoaster seasons ???

Good Blog Ray. A fine (temporary) successor to Jarrod.
I heard that debate on Talksport as well. Complete garbage to think that abolishing promotion/relegation would be good for the game.
If they want to make the game more competitive (and I cant believe Im going to say this) take a leaf out of America’s book and franchise all the clubs, give the most money to the bottom teams and the least money to the top teams. Maybe them we’d win the Premier League!!!

wolves fan here, I can’t recall many times where I have agreed with an albion fan, but i agreed with every word you said! I remember a reporter for cardiff in the build up to the FA cup final summed it up perfectly aswell. He said the supporters of the big 4 “will never appreciate the highs because they haven’t felt the lows”. I’m 16 and could have easily chose man utd (like a LOT of my friends did) but whats the point? They never go to games! Also they had 2 trophies to celebrate last season but it didn’t mean anything to them. Imagine what you would be like if Wolves or another local team won a big trophy. We would still be celebrating!! I couldn’t imagine not being a wolves fan! Roll on 9th August

Jarrod – your P45′ll be on your desk!
Top Drawer Ray!
None of us can be accused of being a “glory-hunter”.
Whether we support from the comfort of our sofa, or attend a few games a season, or hold a home season ticket, or never miss a match home or away – we all support our team in our own way.
Sometimes geography limits our frequency of attendance – some on this site alone are from China/Japan/Australia – would any of those be called a “glory-hunter” for now flying over to take in a piece of the Premiership action?
Not in my book.
And there are some – fewer than I would like – ligitimate PROPER fans of the “Big 4″.
But, like was stated above, you just try asking your average Joe Chelsea in Walsall (or wherever really) to name the winning goal scorer from the Cup Final in the 1997 Cup Final.
I’ll bet they can’t.
I’ll bet most of them hadn’t even seen a football match let alone a Chelsea match until the dirty Rouble moved in!
Anyway, back to the here-and-now.
I’m so excited about this season. Admittedly, I’m in the Arsenal end for the opening game but I shall be there – can’t wait!!
Boing Boing!!
(By the way, it was Di Matteo, in case you’re wondering!)

Personaly I think a lot of it comes down to whether someone introduces you to a team (usualy your Dad)when very young. If im honest Im of the age where if my Dad had not taken me to Wolves games I would probably support Liverpool now, why would I have picked Wolves over Liverpool if I had not been introduced. I wouldnt have been able to go to Wolves games on my own and Liverpool were always on the TV, simple choice really.
Im not sure glory hunters exist in the context of people supporting whoever happens to be the best team in the country at any given time, well not in mass anyway. The few people like this have little credabiity and rightly so. Its more a case of people choosing a team that just so happened to be the best/highest profile team in the country at the time of greatest influence ie when they were young. Most people then continue to support this team for the rest of their lives. I have alot of friends who support Manu and Liverpool but at the same time one or two who support Everton on the basis that they were sucessful in the mid 80′s. I certainly wouldnt call an Everton fan from Cannock a glory hunter though.

Man Utd supporters invariably suffer from what’s been described as “status anxiety”…Probably have a BMW and “branded” designer wear…Running around Bramwich with “Keeno” still emblazoned on their Utd Shirt…..and when approached will swear they’ve supported them since childhood..Is it a coincidence that the vast majority of children who are victims of broken families tend to support Man Utd!…In other words they’ve experienced failure once in their lives and ain’t gonna be tarnished with it again so they “play safe”…Got no time for them..Adrian Chiles sums it up perfectly in his book when he said one win for Wolves or Albion is worth 20 times that of a United win.

Excellent effort on the blog!
I’m sat in an office with a Man U fan, a Chelsea fan and an Everton fan……bad times!!
Between them, they went to 2 matches last season (both at Vile Park).
Whereas I’m seen as stupid for going to every Albion home match, 80% of away matches and as many England matches I can get to (why are they always on Wednesday nights?!)
Because their teams have been more successful (just about) recently, they think it’s more than acceptable to speak about poor little West Brom as though they know what’s going on at my beloved club!!
I have also realised that being a Chelsea / Man United fan means that you must have studied at Football University and know more about the game than anyone else, hence your love since a boy of your surprisingly successful club has grown. I’m going to stop now, as these glory hunters could keep me going for days!!
In the words of Gordon Ramsay….RANT, DONE!!

one reason for the GLORY fans is their young ages and the fact they are not part of the privileged generation like us watching our teams through highs and lows of the 60s 70s through today.

‘Talksport’ have several biased, self opiniated presenters who know exactly how to choose a subject that will get their 50 plus phone lines ringing, thus ensuring even more income for the most popular Commercial radio station in the country.
(And that’s from official figures)
This ‘barmy’ opinion came from Adrian Durham who’s renowned for offering such nonsense, while his co presenter, normally Ian Wright, more often than not disagrees entirely.
The other ‘shock Jocks’ are Mike (Porky) Parry who on one programme argued that with the number of goals scored from corner kicks,it would be more advantagous to be awarded a corner in the last minute of a game instead of a PENALTY!
Terry Christian, who can be heard on on Saturday nights is a RABID Manchester United supporter and heaven help any listen who has the nerve to disagree with his opinion.
In saying that there are presenters who can debate intelligently including a certain Andy Townsend, Nigel Pearson who is a Baggies supporter, and Adrian Goldberg, another devout Albion fan.
Yes they have their own opinions on several subjects BUT nothing as contoversial as the opinion that Promotion and Relegation be abolished.
A TRULY nonsesical that deserves to be consigned to any previous list of nonsensical opinions.

I do agree with most of this blog which is well written although a few too many big words for a football fan.
My only point is this. Wolves probably more than Albion(dont get angry) have a large support in all areas of the uk and beyond. This is because we were the Man Utd or Chelsea of the 50′s. Therefore anyone not from the west Mids(myself included) are the result of our gloryhunting fathers.

Great effort Ray. One of my favourite Baggies goes to Scotland and is replaced by another. I am going to find it difficult to cheer any Gooner goal if any more of you turn out to be good guys!
Whenever we go on holiday it has always been a rule that at least one of us wears a Wulfie shirt at all times. This has given us dozens of meetings with Baggies and others with great banter given and taken but do you know what? I never approach a Manc or a Chelski.
Keep up the good work Ray, that will keep the Bomber on his toes.

Excelent blog but I would have expected nothing less knowing your track record. Nothing much to add about the GH’s that’s not been said already except perhaps the one way of recognising a true GH is that they always have the ready made reason(excuse) for suppoting ‘their team’ ie ‘My great uncle Norbet took me when I was three’ or ‘My mom had a red blouse.’ As other people have said, I’ve more respect for SBBA, Elsie Wolf, LW or even Michael than any GH.
PS. While on the subject of Wulfies. What a great blog from 7 Matt. At 16, a babe in arms in football terms but an old head on young shoulders in real terms. I couldn’t have expressed it better, I think he speaks for all real supporters and I think Supermaths and Haggstone have summed up what constitutes a real supporter. Nice to see that Baggies and Wulfies can agree on something.

The direction football is taking is worrying to say the least. The big four have a vice like grip on English football and seem intent on draining the life blood out of our game for there own self interests. The kind of glory hunters you talk about are a blight because they aren’t interested in the game just status symbols. Authenticity and integrity is not important to them, football might as well be WWF Wrestling. The thing that really winds me up though is how they even try to re-write football history, anything before the Premier League was invented doesn’t count and the list of all time greats starts with Eric Cantona! Chelsea are giants of Europe, I remember when they were pants and there ground was a pit and I’m only 34!

Excellent blog.
As a kid I actually supported Everton, I’m ashamed to say!! Something to do with the fact they play in my favourite colour blue!
Then my Dad took me to my first match October 1988 vs Man City in the old 2nd Division as it was then. Finished 1-1 with Don Goodman the scorer (later he was stretchered off). Been hooked ever since.
For a real fan, supporting your club is like a drug. It gives you the most amazing highs, but also makes you feel like #$%# when it doesn’t go that well.
Most of the older fans remember the days of Astle, Bomber Brown, Clive ‘Chippy’ Clark, Graham Williams, Cyrille Regis, Bryan Robson etc. and say we were better in ‘my day’.
But for me, if you’d have said to me on that cold, wet and miserable night in October ’88, when we were struggling in mid table, that we’d be preparing for an opening day top flight match against the Arsenal 20 years down the line, I’d have taken that.

I’m a Wolves fan living in the USA, & interest in the English Premier League is taking off in a big way here. And yes its equally split between both teams…Chelsea & Man U.
Americans are also losing interest in Major League Soccer as its just pointless.
Its generally recognized that the fundemental difference between the leagues are Promotion & Relegation.
There is just no passion or consequences for winning or losing MLS games. The standard is watchable, but absolutely lifeless. I’d say its English Div 2 standard. I watched one game (New England v Houston) & saw the worst defended goal i’ve ever seen. The conceding team’s home crowd were indifferent to the goal & the defenders & keeper weren’t even bothered. They just picked the ball up & got on with the game & never said a word to each other. I was screaming at the TV.
I’ve seen the Wolves play at 74 different grounds both down to & back up from the 4th Division, so I am pretty experinced in the relegation & promotion phenomenom. As TerryIRRITATINGCAPSLOCKbaggie pointed out scrapping promotion & relegation wouldn’t really affect us as we always finish 7th…But its the distant hope of promotion that really keeps us going. Or as you are about the find out…its the hope of staying up that will keep you on your toes.
As for gloryhunters, I confess that i am one. My first game was seeing Wolves win the 1980 League Cup final!

I’m a glory hunter – a red devil as a young kid I chose my team in the late 70′s. The baggies were flyin high. Still remember listenig to the radio – Hail Atkinson, Hail Addison, Hail Albion. Some great nights in Europe and a demolition of Coventry as i recall. In those days we hated the Villa – Who were Wolves? I love the rollercoaster ride but I hope we are on a long steady climb and no more drops. Maybe some more nights against Red Star Belgrade (or whoever they are now) and Valencia await. Six points off Villa would be good too – Curtis look out the Baggies r coming!!!

because of all the media exposure given now, kids think that`it`s cool the suport any of the big 4(that`s c**p)local teams like us,wolves, blues, villa & walsall have to get to the grass roots and life blood of the kids.
at the baggies we have kids for a quid and free tickets for kids and get slated by others for doing it but THEY ARE THE FUTURE supporters local teams need.
ticket prices for games are too high to take a family like years ago.

‘Forever’…..Jarrod has got some competition !! Excellent blog my friend. On both points I think you are totally right.
How on earth anyone can suggest that football adopts the same idea as rugby league has to be from a different planet. I think they have introduced this into ‘league’ to entice people to stay in / come in with money which again damages grass roots rugby because all the money goes to the teams in the super league.
As for the media…..don’t get me going on that one !! It’s about time these institutions realised that there are, in total more fans that support teams outside the premier and it’s about time they gave those teams a fair crack of the whip. unless you support a premier team you may get a quarter of a column in the weekend papers that just summarises a whole league yet Man U (spit) or Liverpool (spit) or Chelsea (spit) etc etc get pages and pages devoted to them. In a way it’s no wonder kids get their heads turned and buy their shirts – it’s probably because they don’t realise they have a local club!!
Sorry to go on but just one more thing……Terry, welcome back my friend !! Where you been this summer ? Missed your humour. Ready and raring to go for the new season ?

I’d say it was better in the sixties (and earlier but I wasn’t around then.) Not that the football was better or we were better. The reason was that in those days we could have been league champions, as could Wolves, Villa or Blues. The only way to do it now is by getting a multi billionaire owner and shipping in overpaid mercenaries. Change isn’t always good.
26 NOBF.
I think you are guilty of seeing things through rose tinted glasses. You can’t hurry players into signing. They will look for the best deal with their agents acting as auctioneer. Due to their massive fan base and automatic qualification for Europe every year we can’t compete on wages and therefore if the player is willing to play in an inferior league for the money, that’s that. Ask yourself, if you were English and a Belgian club offered you a lot more money than a Dutch club, where would you go?
Your point about Scott Carson is another thing altogether. He’s impressed me as a very down to earth bloke. Certainly not Billy Bigtime, a refreshing change these days.

As our Tez say’s morning Premiership fans, and good morning to the wolfies, we are now into August that seems like another milestone out the way.
26: You mention that baggies dragged there feet, you will probably find Baghera was the one stalling in the hope a late offer would come in, we only actually bid for him a couple of days ago and then were in talks, it’s the same old story where Rangers could offer more wages. We are in a money game now and I for one am glad we are not chucking money away to struggle in years to come.

How lucky are the E&S to have TWO eloquent bloggers? I love the English language but no one could pretend it is easy to use properly. I didn’t hear the daft b****er who proposed no promotion and relegation, but without a bottom of the league, there’s nothing to hold up the top bit. For those of you who wonder about a real football supporter, try to find the Monty Python sketch where Dad and Son can recite every member of their team, reserves as well back over 40 years. It’s as bad as sitting on a wall watching trains go by and writing down their number plate.

I agree mate, Wolves certainly “picked up” admirers from all points of the compass during their halcyon days, so claiming allegiance to a club from without the boundaries of one`s dialect, is not a new phenomenon.
However, and inescapably, it is considerably more prevalent today.
The 24 hour blanket coverage of the clubs mentioned, acts as an intravenous drip of information, so much so, we all know more about these teams than we do our own.
The media desert of Man U, Chelsea etc, thankfully has an oasis, in the form of the E&S.

I must confess that as I got older I got to be less obsessed with Wolves winning and more concerned about how they played – although I still feel wretched for an hour or so when they lose. (ok – so I’m wretched an awful lot etc etc….)
So I do understand those ‘sheep’ who choose teams who tend to lose less and who follow the glamour rather than the team.
But we are all hostage to fortune about who we support – Wolves chose me because I went to see a game (against Hull) at Molineux with a particular friend and from then on I was hooked. I could easily have gone to the Hawthornes because most of my other friends supported WBA. Since then it has always been Wolves for me and it always will be.
Ask yourselves why you support the baggies rather than some other more illustrious team (cos most teams are more illustrious than the baggies) and you will probably appreciate that it could well have been very different for you too.
The fact is no real supporter can ever change their allegiance while the ‘glory hunters’ have no real conviction or affection for ‘their’ team and so they miss out on the great sense of ‘belonging’ that real fans have – even you lot….
Ps – Congrats on your latest win.

Ray – great blog mate – I think we have discussed the GH issue before and I think i may have said that i would rather my lads follow the wolves than Man Utd or whatever team is the current “glamour” club (but I’m finding it hard to maintain those lofty sentiments…) – I think the choices are the Albion or cricket.
I can still name the 1971 Leeds Utd team that did so well around that time – and I can even remember when Leicester were a bit of a high profile club too with Worthington and Weller…. but I’ve never followed another team other than the baggies – and I’m working on my two lads to do the same.
We all want to see the great players – thats why some of our games this season are £40 quid.. but can you imagine bothering to go to the seal enclosure just cos Rooney and Co were playing there ???

The fact remains that the gulf now between the Premiership and the rest of the league is huge and it’s growing. Unless something is done many clubs will go to the wall which is sad. Which is why I’m so glad that JP is not frittering cash away in the mere hope that the signings come off.
The way the game is going, the England manager will be picking his team from League 1 before long, too many foreigners. Not just players, but managers and chairman who know little about English football and care even less.

Totally agree 47. Charlton are now a selling club just to make ends meet. Maybe the present down-spiral in the economy will eventually hit the big boys too and the foreign players will seek pastures new.
