The discovery was made at the bottom of steps off Bridgnorth Road, Compton, which lead down to the towpath near Alex’s Cafe Bar.

The body was thought to be that of a man in his 20s and police were today treating the death as unexplained.

Police sealed off the scene after being alerted just after 8am by Dave Bradley, aged 63, who has lived on a narrowboat moored near the scene for six years.

He said: “He appeared to have fallen and possibly broken his neck.”

The stretch of water, which is lined with narrowboats and is part of the Smestow Valley Nature Reserve, is a popular route for joggers and walkers.
