Mutley eyes title fight after Latvian
Thursday 24th July 2008, 9:29AM BST.
Black country hero Young Mutley has one eye on reclaiming his British welterwight title when he faces Latvian number two Sergejs Savrinovics at Wolverhampton Civic Hall tonight.
The West Bromwich man has been on the long road back to contention, since he lost the belt to Kevin Anderson two years ago.
His step into the ring on the top of the bill at the Civic is the first time he has fought at the venue since losing the European EBU Light Welterweight title fight against Colin Lynes on July 20 last year.
Now there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel, with Mutley likely to meet the winner of an eliminator that will be fought by November, which would give him the real chance of reclaiming his British title.
Mutley knows the unknown Savrinovics could prove a banana skin – and also knows that the powers-that-be in British boxing will have their eye on him.
He said: “A win is my way of showing them that I am back and better than ever. I just want my belt back. It has been a long road back but it has made me a better fighter.
“My opponent is an unknown for me, but as long as I box my sort of match I will be fine. I have real fire in belly and he will feel that.”
At 32 years old, Mutley knows time is not on his side, with what he wants to achieve. For him, the bare minimum is to call it a day as a two-time British Welterweight champion.
He said: “This is the pinnacle of my career now. I truly believe that I am the best British welterweight there is. I probably have three years left in me and I want to go from strength to strength.
“I am feeling good, looking good and I feel that I cannot be stopped. You will see that at the Civic. He may be Latvia’s number two boxer but he is in for a real long night against me.”
