Man dies in hit-and-run

A man was killed in a hit- and-run accident in Wolverhampton city centre last night. The 57-year-old was struck by a Mercedes car in Chapel Ash at its junction with Clifton Street.

An ambulance crew and incident support officer tried to resuscitate the man before taking him to hospital where he was certified dead.

Chapel Ash was closed for several hours after the accident, at around 10.20pm. A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.
