Vokes patient for No 9 dream
Wednesday 23rd July 2008, 11:21AM BST.
Sam Vokes wore the famous Wolves number nine shirt on his debut – but he admits he might have to be patient in his bid to don it regularly.
Wolves’ first summer signing finally made his bow in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Dundee, after recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the first two friendlies.
Striker Vokes – who yesterday met touring fans and happily signed autographs – played the first half, marking his debut with a somewhat harshly disallowed effort for pushing a defender.
He said: “I was great to wear the number nine shirt on my debut. Every striker wants to wear the number shirt but I know there are a lot of lads ahead of me at the moment.
“We’ll have to see what happens. I might have to start on the bench, but if I get a chance one day, I’ve got to go out and prove myself. That’s the only way you can break through to the first team.”
Vokes is just happy to fit to compete after his injury.
He said: “I was happy with my performance as a debut after doing my ankle. It was good to get into it an I just need to work on my sharpness now before the start of the season.
“I trained fine for the first two weeks then the day before the Wrexham game, I just pulled up with a little ankle injury. But it’s all good now.”
