The 47-year-old was hit in the torso during an attack in the bar of The Waggon & Horses pub, in Cannock Road, during the early hours.

The gun attack comes just nine days after the road was closed off when shots were fired in the early hours.

It is also just yards from the spot where the dismembered body of Black Country DJ David Daly was found in March.

Today a Wolverhampton MP called for the future of the pub to be reviewed following the shooting.

Police and paramedics were called to the pub at 5.05am yesterday.

The pub remained sealed off this afternoon, with detectives continuing their investigations inside and in the car park.

West Midlands Police Spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said: “At the time of the shooting, it is believed there were a number of people around who left the scene.

“Detectives are appealing to them, or anyone who has any information, to contact them as soon as possible. All information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”

The man’s condition was today described as serious but stable. Police, who are believed to be guarding him for his own protection, refused to say where he was being treated.

It was the latest in a string of attacks in the Cannock Road area, close to the entrance to the former Springfield Brewery.

The pub was last sealed off on July 11 after reports of gunfire.

Wolverhampton South West MP Rob Marris said: “The police need to look very carefully at whether this pub should continue.”

Witnesses are asked to call the police on 0845 113 5000.
