Turner tips Wolves for Premiership

Thursday 17th July 2008, 12:10PM BST.

wd291475689-wms-hereford-t.jpgFormer Wolves boss Graham Turner believes his old club have Premier League class after they destroyed Hereford.

Turner tipped his old club for the top flight after the Bulls are outplayed and beaten 3-1 by Mick McCarthy’s men last night.

“Throughout the side they have that work ethic vital to be successful and that work ethic with the quality they have might just be enough for them to go up,” said Turner.

“Reports coming from Wrexham last Saturday weren’t too complimentary, but first and foremost, Mick has some good players.

“You can see the quality they have up front in the boy Ward who came on in the second half and got a couple of goals.

“He caused us problems and took his goals extremely well, and all four centre-halves did well.

“Secondly, you could see what they had worked on in training – the players carried out what they had done on the training ground extremely well.

“They look sharp and bright. Mick has a lot of experience and will get the team organised, particularly defensively.

“That said, it was our second game in three days and our fourth so far.

“But it was hard work against a very good Wolves side which had so much good organisation and who pressed the ball.”

Turner believes McCarthy’s gambles with lower league players such as Michael Kightly – who scored a wonder volley forthe equaliser at EdgarStreet – are paying off.

“He’s taken a chance with one or two players from lower leagues and they have done well for him and I hope that continues,” said the ex-Molineux chief, who was Wolves manager for almost eight years from 1986-94.

“Mick is one of those characters in the game who you hope does well. He’s always been prepared to lend a hand to smaller clubs in terms of loaning players and that’s appreciated.

“I still watch Wolves with interest – they were my team as a kid and I supported them. So I hope it goes extremely well for him and Wolves.”

Cheers Graham – still a legend around these parts! Pleased to see him doing so well with Hereford, wonder if he can emulate with them what he achieved with us (ie two successive promotions) – would be very tough but he seems to know the lower leagues very well. And if Donny can do it, then maybe Herefore can as well.

its very nice of Mr Turner to say we are a good team. He was an excellent manager for us

However the point is that anybody who regularly attends games knows we need the side to show
1 : more creativity in midfield
2: more defensive discipline and pace

If those issues are cleared up we should be in the top 6 this season and lets be realistic thats all anybody to do with the club can hope for

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been going to games for 1 month or 50 years, if people display the kind of attitude that you have then you have to expect criticism from all the decent fans who SUPPORT THEIR CLUB. What a complete and utter moron you are southbank, you are surely albion through and through for those comments, this club was dying on its feet when turner took over, it was on the brink of the conference, he dragged us away from near relegation, took us to 2 promotions, and won the sherpa van trophy, you say he is not a legend, lets put it this way.

When he took over, wolves were a run down club that no one would touch with a barge pole, the culture was a negative one and everyone expected to beat us.
He changed the culture, wolves are now in a position they are through him, the first promotion from 4th to 3rd division i think you will find was done BEFORE sir Jack come in, so you cant even say it was done with money.

Let me put it this way to you Southbank, you say because Turner only took us so far, because he only took us to 2 promotions, and 1 sherpa van, and that was ALL he did for the club he is no legend…. surely with that you are bracketing Steve Bull in with that too, because hey, thats all he did too!

Never commented on these sites before. Lot of it pretty sad. Mr Turner did a sterling job when we were rock bottom. As for Mr 48 you don’t realise how lucky you are being able to have the opportunity to have a season ticket. I was born in Wolves but moved away and then joined the army where I spent the best part of 15 years doing a lot of globe trotting. Many a time I would tune in far off place such as Africa just to get the results on the World Service and more than often Mr Bull and co would lift my spirits back in those days. I now live in Norway and work over in Iraq I will never be able to have a season ticket but my 3 or 4 games a season will do (and to get to probably cost more than your season ticket). Point is I would never boo my team, be disappointed yes but boo no. But you see that is the whole point of teamwork and a never say die attitude. How many guys boo you where you work, well behind your back anyway because you sound like you have the personality of a whinger. If you had been in my mob then yours would have been the parachute sitting in the hangar on its own. If you don’t like the games go watch some other team. You can’t be very bright to have spent 21 years worth of money on something you don’t like. Here’s hoping for a decent season and as long as the guys give their all you cannot ask for more!

When future historians are rewriting the history of Wolves, if there is any justice in the world, Graham Turner will be properly acknowledged for rescuing the club from potential oblivion, turning the team into one where every player was proud to be a member of the club and which played exciting attacking adventurous football.

What GT performed on a shoestring budget was little short of a miracle and he has never fully received the praise he deserves.

When sacked, he handled the situation with immense dignity. What a pity that some people who comment on this site cannot act with the same dignity.

The man and his comments should always receive a warm welcome in these parts for what he did for us.

The club would not be in the position it is today if it were not for his incredible hard-work and dedication. (ANd no, that’s not an invitation for sarcastic comments!)

I actually live just off Edgar Street and I am a massive Wolves fan. Turner is a legend. And to any dirty baggies fan Turner has a record of producing promotion teams. This time last season Hereford had 5 players on there books and he led them to promotion in there second season back in the football league. Could they do it again? Maybe not this season but definatly next. There is not a massive difference of quality between League One and Two. They beat leeds pretty easily last season and Hereford have always been a good footballing side. Turner plays the game the right way. He is also Chairman which is pretty remarkable when he you think about it. Did I mention that he is the second longest serving manager behind Sir Alex Fergerson. So Dont diss turner, you should respect him for the LEGEND that he is. As for Steven Ward, how can you dig at him when he scored two goals. He may not be good enough for Wolves as a left winger but as a Striker he scores goals. That is a fact. If he was somewhere else at a lower team in the championship or even Hereford he would score a hatful. He is also young so lets give him a chance….I’d rather have him than Craig Beattie.

Anyways, I hope the tesco lot stay up coz were coming for you next season with the most exciting group of young footballers in Britan. Oh and a good chairman…with money. Yeah we dont have a defence but we have, The best Young keeper in the world. The Best English Keeper. The Best player in the Championship….the next Ryan Giggs. The top Scorer in the championship and the most explosive english striker in years. We have the Welsh Shearer. Sam Vokes. Oh and we have the best Irish young player since the legend that is Keane. In Keogh. Did i mention that Robbie Keane played for us too. No. Well he did. WOOOP WOOOP….It’s the new Boing Boing. Ask your masters team. 7-1.mmmmm. WOOOOOP WOOOOOOP!!!

Well, now you’ve destroyed Hereford the football world is your oyster.

You’ll be lucky if you finish top 10 as you over achieved again last season.

Just look at mick mccarthy’s reply after being asked the question ‘How far away are wolves from the premiership’ – that’s right, about 8 miles down the road.
