Leeds target striker Bothroyd

Thursday 17th July 2008, 11:28AM BST.

jay.jpgLeeds have stepped up their interest in transfer-listed Wolves striker Jay Bothroyd – but there is still some way to go before a deal can be struck.

Elland Road boss Gary McAllister has made no secret of wanting to sign another striker and says he has agreed terms to sign a player.

Wolves have confirmed Leeds’ interest in the 26-year-old, but there is no confirmation that the player McAllister wants is Bothroyd.

“I don’t want to show our cards too much, but we have agreed terms with a club for another player,” said McAllister.

“It’s not completed and I’d rather wait before I say who it is.”

The main stumbling block appears to be whether Bothroyd, who has a year left on his contract, can be persuaded to leave Molineux, rather than any disagreement over the fee.

Bothroyd has been told he has no future with Wolves and is highly unlikely to play for the first team again.

That means if he will be left behind at Compton when the squad depart for their three-match Scottish tour on Saturday.

But that so far hasn’t prevented him stalling on leaving.

The update on Bothroyd comes as Wolves have strongly denied any interest in Sheffield Wednesday’s centre-half Mark Beevers.

Reports elsewhere today said Wolves have made a £1.75m bid for the 18-year-old after failing to capture Hearts’ Christophe Berra and Norwich stopper Jason Shackell.

But Wolves believes the reports are no more than mischief-making.

Meanwhile, Stephen Ward hopes he has given boss Mick McCarthy a selection poser after his two-goal salvo in the 3-1 win at Hereford last night.

“You can only do your best. There are plenty of good strikers here so we’ll have to wait and see what happens,” said Ward.

“It’s a massive squad, there are a lot of good players and we’ve also got new signings and everyone wants to be in the starting XI.

“If people don’t do it, then we’ve got other players who can do a job, which will hopefully stand us in good stead.

“It’s only the second friendly and we’re still finding our feet – we’ll improve as pre-season goes on.”

    “It’s a massive squad”

You’re not wrong there wardy, seems we prefer quantity over quality.
I think Ward could actually do a job for us (probably has a sub) IF Mick decides to play him in his natural role.

i hope he(bothroyd) does go to leeds we need rid asap, bags of talent but showing this once or twice a season not good enough.

not sure about beevers if the story is to be believed. if we have offered £1.75 million why on earth did we not offer that sort of money to start with for berra. he was so unsettled at hearts, no manager, no money, no one else was in for him. we will regret not bagging him you see next 12 months or so he will be sold for big money.

anyway hope to see some of you up here next week, will be at dundee and motherwell not sure if can get to kilmarnock game. getting to see wolves without too much travelling makes a change.

Beevers is the sort of player we are looking for. I doubt whether we will get Shittu, as I am sure he would love to join Rangers.
Get rid of Bothroyd and we will only get about £350k tops – in my opinion. We have the forwards now to score 60 goals – Ebanks-Blake 25, Keogh 15, Ikelomu 10, Vokes 5, Ward 5 – the midfield should easily be able to score 15-20 and then the defenders 5-10.
One more defender and a midfielder in the Downing mode and we are on for a good season!

Mark Beevers is exactly the kind of player we should be looking at .. player of the season for them I believe, young, premiership interest.

We still need to spend some decent amounts on a couple of star players … Shittu and Ledley would be my favs…

After selling Eastwood, Oli next for £2m-£3m and the others listed, will we actually bring in more than we spend this close season?! C’mon Morgan lets invest in some more talent adn blow the division away!

6 Mighty Wanderer, I believe Gerrard signed a new 2 year contract in February and my understanding is he’s not available on a free,my guess would be about 800k but even at that I still think he could be a good buy, on a free he’d be a bargain,

As JB is no longer wanted at the club for whatever reasons then we need to get rid ASAP. Agree with 4. scotwolf…if this is true and Sky have reported as well (not that I think Sky is gospel) then why not splash the extra Hearts way for Berra when we had the chance.

I think we’ll get a lot more from Ward as a striker this season which will be good for competition in this department.

From the Hereford blog, I see McCarthy notes that they did not train on the morning hence the rest helped them concentrate on putting in a good performance as opposed to a shift

Are things finally clicking with him???

Wardy scores 2 goals against a poor side last night. Lets not get carried away, agreed you can only beat what you have got in front of you but the acid test will be against Incey’s blackburn. I think its SEB and AK starting role, Wardy on bench at best.

Dunno about this CB from Wednesday. Leeds want JB, they must have seen sommat we aint. I hope he goes. League 1 is JB’s level. We still need another midfielder as if Oli goes will leave us with Edwards, the new lad from derby, Henry, Gleeson and Davies, we need 1 quality guy!

Hopefully this is the last we’ve seen of jay. Showed signs of being massive quality, but didnt produce that quality often enough. Beevers would be a top quality signing, however we he is another youngster. Im worried that we have no old heads around to help our young squad. I think mick is wrong in targeting ‘experienced players’ who are still only 24 for example. Wev lost Breen and probably seyi soon, leving us with craddock and gray as the only two outfield players over the age of about 24.

bothroyd can be devastating when he feels like it,but, seldom does. hence the amount of clubs under his belt for a 26 year old. touching on the size of our squad, it really is top heavy and if we don’t start shipping bodies out mr moxey will trot out the ‘ need to sell before we add to the squad ‘line that really is one of his personal favourites !

Mad Mick is totally dysfunctional. We have a squad that could support three leagues, but we have just got rid of the reserve team!

Could you see a proper manager like Martin O’Neill signing this many players for just a single Championship squad?

The man is totally out of control. He doesn’t know what he wants. He doesn’t know who is his best player in any position.

We have far too many palyers on a wage at the club as a result of Mad Micks policy of “throw enough mud and something will stick” -a sure sign of a manager who has not much confidence in his own abiility to properly judge and assess players hence we go from one extreme of not having enough players to signing up anyone who has been rumoured to have kicked a ball in the past!

Jay Bothroyd reports on SSN this morning that Leeds have bid £300k for him – Bothroyd is not keen on playing in Div 1 so this one may/may not happen?

Beevers at Sheff Wed – signed an improved 4 year contract – and doesnt want to play in Prem yet as he prefers Sheffield (Hometown boy)
Sounds like more spin and BS from Moxey’s spin machine – so dont hold your breath! Moxey = Sell more season tickets/ Bums on seats!

As season gets nearer expect more of the same – unless we start clearing out several of MM’s mad mix of rag tag so called footballers – the unchosen many that are on 2/3 year contracts that no-one wants except Mad Mick – wage bill has to be cut down first!
