Jones looks to plug Seyi gap
Tuesday 15th July 2008, 10:20AM BST.
David Jones believes he can fill the gap set to be vacated by wantaway Wolves midfielder Seyi Olofinjana.
Jones made his debut in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Wrexham, linking up well with Mark Davies in a 45-minute outing.
Olofinjana is likely to leave this summer after being transfer-listed for £3m.
Despite the physical differences between the two – Jones is some five inches smaller than the 6ft 4ins Nigerian – the former Derby man believes he can be as effective.
He said: “I’ve seen quite a bit of Seyi play – he’s a quality player and provides that physical aspect. In today’s game, you’ve got to be physical as a midfielder anyway.
“I know he’s a big presence, but you can be a presence in other ways without being that style of player.
“You’ve all got to be strong, quick and have a lot of stamina in today’s midfield.
“I don’t think that would be an issue, although he’s still a quality player and everyone wants to keep him at the club.”
Despite Olofinjana’s impending exit, Jones believes the competition in the middle of the park is strong, with Mark Davies and Dave Edwards.
He said: “I’ve seen the quality of the midfield and that’s only going to be good for the club.
“‘Sparky’ (Davies) and Dave Edwards are in there and there’s a lot of competition for places which can only be good.
“Just from playing alongside ‘Sparky’, he looks a quality act. We were on the same wavelength which is good.
“As midfielders, we both like to link play and already I think there’s an understanding there.
“I haven’t seen much of him before I was here because he’s been injured, but I can see he’s a decent player who I’m looking forward to playing with.
“He could definitely impress at this level. It’s early days, but already I can see young players with great ability who I think could definitely hold their own in the Premier League.”
“We’ve got a really good team spirit already – it seems I know the lads quite well already.
“It’s just a case of getting used to how they play. The balls haven’t been out that long – only over the last week.
“This week we’ll be trying to get to know each other’s games.”
