Fred the tramp’s £34,000 legacy

Tuesday 15th July 2008, 11:43AM BST.

Fred the TrampWolverhampton’s famous ring road tramp Fred left behind a total of £34,000 in unclaimed pension money, it was revealed today.

The true amount of savings stored away by Josef Stawinoga emerged today, after it was announced new relatives may now have been found who could be in line for a slice of the windfall.

The 86-year-old, known affectionately as Fred, made his home on the city’s ring road for 30 years. He died of pneumonia in his tent last October.

His relatives should be made to fight for his pension just like poor Linda Timmins is having to do! As reported in the E&S on 30.4.08 – Linda’s husband Michel worked for Dudley Council for 34 years however, Linda, his partner of 30 years, is not entitled to any of his pension because they were not married and they want to return his pension to the pension fund!

This country is so messed up!

Fred’s pension should be returned to the pension fund – if he wanted his relative to have it, he’d have sent it to them when he was alive.

Dudley’s LG pension scheme for the last 10 years at least has included a form, sent every year with your accruals, for you to nominate someone to receive your pension in the event of your untimely death. It takes 3 minutes to complete.

People plead ignorance because they can’t be bothered to read their own pension details, then complain after the event. People are so messed up !

KEEP IT!!He didn’t want it so why should anyone else have it. The council should put a bill in to claim for the cleaning up after him over the years. OUR COUNTRY IS MAD! GIVE MONEY TO THE NEEDY NOT SOMEONE WHO HASN’T GIVEN A SOD FOR 50 YEARS.

How much would be left after paying his rent and council tax on his home? This is where he CHOSE to live so he should pay a rent and council tax like everyone else.At the end of the day he lived a long and happy life so why should he be allowed to accrue this money for his relatives? It’s ridiculous.People work hard all their lives to leave something behind for their kids and something like this happens.Might as well sell up and get a tent and pitch it anywhere you like.

Fancy having an ammount of cash lying dormant,
and never even touching it!Something in his
long past must have troubled him so much to
make him live a life like that!I respect him
    endlessly for that!

What a lot of bitter people in Wolves!! It isn’t reported that relatives would be getting the cash just that relatives may have been identified that could be entitled to a share. Calm down and worry about some real issues.

Rayman what are you on about?

Was Fred better off by living on a ring road in all weathers and not claiming money owed to him?

Why don’t you live like that if you think it’s the way to get one over on the system!

I think we can safely say Fred had some prety serious psychological issues. Most people aren’t homeless because they can’t find a home, they’re homeless because they can’t deal with mainstream society. To say Fred has ripped off the system and must have been happy is ridiculous. I suggest we spend the £35,000 on a basic education for Rayman.

How much did this dirtry tramp cost the taxpayer every year to clean up his mess? Use his money to recompense the taxpayers who have paid to have his mess cleared up time and time again.

He probably never realised the money would be his if he never claimed it, And he probably didn’t claim it because he didn’t want to be helped by society he just wanted to live peaceful by himself.
