Some of the Wolves heros of yesteryear have spoken of their joy at seeing a Wednesbury playing field renamed after one of the team’s former stars.

The Bilston Road Playing Fields was renamed the Norman Deeley Playing Fields in memory of the Wednesbury-born footballer who died in September last year.

Friends, former players and family as well as onlookers gathered at the green spot, where Norman played as a child, to see the playing fields officially re-opened on Saturday.

Among those attending were ex-players including Barry Stobart, who played alongside Norman in the 1960 FA Cup Final, Bobby Mason and Ted Farmer, with daughter Jayne Cooper, his brother Walter and sister Marge Newton.

Tipton-born former footballer Bobby Mason, who won two First Division Championship medals for Wolves, said: “I think it is a brilliant thing to do for him, he would have loved it, is just a shame that he was not here to see it.”

Ted Farmer, aged 68, a prolific striker at Molineux in the 60s, said: “He was a lovely man, one of those footballers who was a man of the people.”

The winger was born in Wednesbury and lived in The Close, off Bilston Road.

He was only 5ft 4ins and played for Wolves as a winger during the golden era of the 1950s.
