Eleven bus shelters and phone boxes in Stafford have been smashed up in a wrecking spree by yobs.

Council workers were today  clearing up mounds of broken glass after shelters on the A34 at Radford Bank and one at Weeping Cross were shattered over the weekend.

The incidents are the latest in a recent series of vandal attacks all over Stafford. 

Last week, glass panels in bus stops and telephone boxes in Marston Road, Sandon Road, Weston Road and Stone Road were shattered, along with two shelters in Eccleshall Road.

With so many shelters vandalised in a short space of time, police are investigating potential links between the incidents. 

And as the vandalism is spread over a large area, officers think the offenders could have used a vehicle to get from one shelter to another. 

Streetscene workers from Stafford Borough Council have been out to clear up the broken glass and make the shelters safe until they are repaired. 

Today, Councillor Patrick Farrington, Stafford Borough Council’s cabinet member for community, commented: “It’s just wanton vandalism – there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it. It’s a mindless act of stupidity and it means that people are put to the trouble and expense of cleaning up afterwards.”

Meanwhile, a stolen car was set alight on Saturday after it was raced around a retail park in Stafford.

It is believed that the estate car was abandoned and set on fire by joyriders after one of its wheels fell off.

A truck driver reported the Vauxhall Vectra Estate on fire behind the Wicks store on the Madford Retail Park, off Stone Road, at about 5am.
