Delays hit first day at new junction
Monday 7th July 2008, 7:12PM BST.
A new traffic signal system on Walsall’s busy Arboretum junction caused hold-ups today as rush-hour commuters faced it for the first time.
Traffic lights have been switched on at the new-look junction, used by thousands of cars and lorries every day.
The switch-over took place yesterday to help minimise disruption, with drivers urged to be aware of the changes.
But its real test came today as hundreds of motorists negotiated the junction for the first time during rush hour.
And the new system experienced some teething problems as some of the lights appeared slightly out, allowing only around three cars through at a time.
The problem caused some tailbacks, particularly along Lower Rushall Street and Mellish Road, taking workers up to 15 minutes longer than usual to get into the town this morning.
Motorist Paul Jones was among those who faced a delay after getting stuck at the Lichfield Street junction. The 43-year-old said: “The lights are holding people up unlike when the roundabout was there.”
Councillor Anthony Harris, Walsall Council cabinet member for highways, said: “Overall, we have been very pleased with how the Arboretum junction has been operating.”
