A world-renowned violinist has paid a visit to a Staffordshire primary school as part of an initiative to make classical music more accessible to a wider audience.

Tasmin Little met pupils at Huntington Primary School, Cannock, as part of her Naked Violin project which aims to bring classical music to as wide an audience as possible. She held workshops which demonstrated that classical music has something for everyone. Tasmin spent the morning with pupils from the school, talking to them about classical music and getting them involved in playing.

The morning culminated in a special assembly put on by the pupils, showcasing their musical skills.

Head teacher, Lyn Small, said: “The children at Huntington school have been working hard to develop their musical skills in preparation for the visit by Tamsin.

“Children at the school are well supported by the governing body who budget for Staffordshire Performing Arts to teach and demonstrate instruments across the school.

“All of the children in our year three classes are able to learn the violin and many have decided to follow this through in years four, five and six.

“Tasmin’s visit was an inspiration to them and showed what can be achieved with determination and practice. This visit will be a memory that many of the children will cherish for years to come.”

County councillor Maureen Compton, support member for culture and heritage, said: “Having someone of Tasmin’s calibre coming to one of our schools was extremely exciting.”

County Councillor Peter Beresford, cabinet member for children and young people, added: “This project is an excellent opportunity to get more youngsters keyed in to classical music.”
