Wolves move for Norwich’s Shackell

Wolves have made a £1m swoop for Norwich central defender Jason Shackell – but doubt whether the deal will come off.
Boss Mick McCarthy has been searching for another centre-half all summer and still believes he can snaffle Hearts stopper Christophe Berra.
In keeping with the club’s policy of making several bids for one position, they have offered seven figures for Shackell as well.
Norwich will be reluctant to lose another stopper, with Shackell is one of only four fit defenders on the books.
The move for the 6ft 4ins 24-year-old is seen as one of the lesser likelier transfers because of Norwich’s shortage at the back.
Recent captain Shackell fits into the Wolves’ desired ‘young and hungry’ profile.
After making his bow for the Canaries in their Premier League relegation season of 2002-03, he has amassed 118 League appearances for the club.

Doubt you guys will get your hands on shacks, 1: we don’t have enough defenders to let him go, 2: hes still a good and young prospect in fans and prolly Roeders’ eyes, and 3: I’m sure we all value him more than 1million. So either Wolves need to make an offer we can’t refuse or look elsewhere ;)

In my opinion what wolves have done is bang out of order. Trying to unsettle a player that is in contract with a stupid offer that they have said will not be accepted!!! thats bordering on “tapping” the player up . Not here for debate or to cause arguments it’s just my opinion

9 – happy, vokes wasn’t on the transfer list, and stearman wasn’t on the transfer list but we made offers for them when it looked like they may end up at prem clubs and got them.

Happy, as usual you are just trying to make mischief, why don’t you give it a rest, everyone can see what you’re doing. If you are able to tell me that West Brom have never bid for a player who is under contract at another club and therefore ‘not for sale’ then I will tell you that Albion have a solid-looking defence that is sure to concede the least amount of goals in the Premier League next season.

Don’t understand all the negative Wolves fans on here and the abuse from Albion, who have they signed?? Oh thats it they missed out on an Irelnd pub player!! Also we are buying well…we have Vokes, Stearman and Jones already. Shackell is ok but it shows we are out there looking for people. If Berra comes good but we need other irons in the fire. For me forget Mclean, get rid of Eastwood and get in a hard midfielder.

Baggie Boy, tapping up a player is I am sure going behind the clubs back, not offering the club a transfer fee.

19. You’ve got to judge each transfer on its individual merits. McLean doesn’t want to be sold and the bosses at Hearts are apparently nowhere to be seen. Let’s not forget as well that we have managed to pull off three very good signings already this summer.

And none of the transfer-listed failures from last season have had any offers. We are going to have more players next season than anybody else in the Championship. Will we get a prize for that? Because that’s about all we will win next season.
The 3 players bought so far look good, but once Mad Mick starts playing them out of position, and playing his current favorites over the man in form, and expecting every attacker to be a defender first, then it will be the same dire football as last season.

If you really want a player put in a realistic bid and make the player believe he’s wanted as an individual.
It seems to me that the tactic is to bid for anyone half-decent who fits the “young and hungry” description and wait for a club to bite!
It’s naive and disrespectful to other clubs and how does a player decide that Wolves really want him rather than being one of a number that we’ve put bids in on!
This makes buying a complete lottery. I would rather the money was clearly targeted for specific players rather than this scattergun approach.
Better 3 good buys worked on quietly and delivered than bidding for 20 in the hope that 5 come off.
I don’t frankly care whether Freddie comes or goes but he was one of a dozen strikers we showed a general interest in through the last close season, we finally signed him just before the start of the season and Mick’s heap of praise on him when he signed has been shown to be worthless. A lesson to learn, methinks.

I always thought this meant the player had been bought, if a club “swooped” for him ???!!
This headline is very misleading – a more accurate description would be:- “Wolves tried to swoop for Shackell, but only flew past!!”

Plenty of dead wood at the club to swap for Shackell – if Norwich have got a paper thin squad then they might be tempted with a clutch of Championship players – Bothroyd, Eastwood, Edwards and a couple of Wards.

22 London wolf….Both Stearman and Vokes were transfers that ‘came out of nowhere’ Totally unexpected. These transfers that become protracted hardly ever seem to come good. I know it’s ‘news’ and it is entertaining but I would bet that berra and this guy don’t end up at molineux – but I hope I’m wrong.

Given that Wolves usually keep their cards close to their chest, this is a very strange story. In the more recent Elokobi article, the E&S tells us:
“The club are not denying a £1m bid was made for powerful 6ft 4in Norwich centre half Jason Shackell but do not expect it to be come to anything.
“The bid was made at the start of the summer but Shackell appears to be a secondary target in the event of Wolves being unable to clinch a deal for first choice Hearts defender Christophe Berra.
“That is proving a protracted business but the interest in Shackell will only be stepped up if Wolves give up on Berra.”
So why announce it now? Jason Shackell is going to be really impressed by these words, isn’t he? Not! On the face of it, it’s a really stupid and self-destructive statement.
As Wolves usually keep mum, this has to be regarded as a non-event–an empty sop thrown to the fans to try and keep us happy in the absence of any positive transfer news. I should think it’s all but killed the possibility of signing Shackell stone dead. Astonishing!

Sorry you’ve still not convinced me!! No realistic baggie is kidding themselves that we’re favourites agains the gunners, but I’d still rather be in the prem than also rans agains QPR, Reading, Birmingham, Derby – all sides that are going to be challenging next year.
You lot saying you’re happy in the championship proves one of two things – either you’ve no ambition or you are pig sick that we are better.
