Third man Mattis signs for Walsall

Thursday 3rd July 2008, 11:24AM BST.

mattis.jpegWalsall have signed their third player in four days with the capture of Barnsley midfielder Dwayne Mattis.

The 26-year-old should know the Banks’s Stadium well, he played four games for the Saddlers on loan last season before breaking his leg.

His arrival comes hot on the heels of defender Steve Roberts and striker Jabo Ibhre signing up.

Mattis came through the ranks at hometown club Huddersfield Town, where he made 79 appearances in all competitions.

He moved on to Bury in the summer of 2004 and made a big impact at Gigg Lane in over 100 games.

His performances earned him a £50,000 switch into the Championship with Barnsley in January 2007.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 International is looking forward to recapturing the form that made him a popular figure among the Saddlers’ faithful.

He said: “I’m excited to be back. I enjoyed my football the last time I was here and, to be honest, it brought back my love for the game.

“The injury put a permanent move on the back burner but now I am fully fit and raring to go again.”

Good on Jimmy Mullen – let’s have a quality striker and a good right winger and then we are on our way. Now let’s all get behind Jimmy and the lads – no more of this, “I’m gonna boycott home games” rubbish. Up the Saddlers!

Let’s just see how he does, we still need 2 more midfielders and another striker yet and really and truthfully another backup defender.
