Saddlers roll of honour due out soon

Tuesday 1st July 2008, 11:15AM BST.

The names of some of Walsall Football Club’s most popular players and managers who are going to be recognised by having executive boxes named in their honour for next season will be known soon.

Fans were asked to pick those most worthy of the accolade with a total of 12 boxes due to be renamed.

As part of the 75th anniversary of the Saddlers FA Cup victory against Arsenal an executive area was called the Gilbert Alsop box after the goalscorer.

The club created a shortlist of players and managers and asked fans to nominate who should be recognised at the Bank’s Stadium.

They have included Nick Atthey, Stan Bennett, Alan Buckley, Allan Clarke, Ray Graydon, Ron Green, Frank Gregg, Bill Gutteridge, Colin Harrison, Peter Hart and Ken Hodgkisson.

Others were Sammy Holmes, Mick Kearns, David Kelly, Jorge Leitao, Albery McPherson, Chris Marsh, Bill Moore, Geoff Morris and Kenny Mower.

Finally Martin O’Connor, David Preece, Tony Richards, Ian Roper, Charlie Saw, Colin Taylor, Harry Wait and James Walker were also been suggested.

Nominations have closed and those chosen are expected to be announced soon. Walsall FC spokesman Andrew Poole said: “Each executive box at the Banks’s Stadium is undergoing a major revamp during the summer and will be resplendent with a name plaque featuring the chosen personality.”

A special programme was sold at the game against Swindon last season to mark the 75th anniversary of the victory against the Gunners.
