McLean hands in transfer request
Tuesday 1st July 2008, 3:11PM BST.
Wolves’ target Aaron Mclean has handed in a transfer request in a bid to leave promoted League One side Peterborough.
The 33-goal League Two top scorer, who returned to pre-season training with Posh yesterday, wants to join his former Grays team-mate Michael Kightly at Molineux.
In a statement, Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed the striker had been transfer listed.
He said: “I offered Aaron the most lucrative contract in the history of Peterborough United and Aaron has responded by putting in a transfer request this morning.
“We have therefore reluctantly placed him on the transfer list. As stated before, any interested parties will have to pay the club £3m up front, plus various add-ons and a sell-out clause for the transfer of his registration.
“As far as I am concerned, if we do not get the asking price then Aaron will work out the remainder of his contract until 2011.”
Wolves have already made two bids to sign the 25-year-old, the last of which was £1.5m, which was rejected by the London Road club.
In an outburst to the Express & Star, Posh director of football Barry Fry insisted the club would not sell for less than £3m up front, plus £2m on promotion to the Premier League, and a sell-on clause.
Wolves reluctantly pulled out of the bidding, yet remain confident no one will pay the asking price for a player who was plying his trade in the fourth tier of English football last season.
It remains to be seen whether Posh will budge on their demands, knowing they now have an unhappy player on their hands.
