£1m man Jones signs for Wolves

Derby midfielder David Jones has become Wolves’ third summer signing after agreeing a three-year deal.

Jones signed his contract at Compton after a fee of £1m had been agreed some weeks ago by the clubs.
The 23-year-old left-sided midfielder arrives to some fanfare and has been hailed by some as the missing creative link.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “David’s arrival follows the same young and hungry path as Sam Vokes and Richard Stearman.
“His pedigree is second to none having been schooled at Manchester United and he was the mainstay of Derby’s promotion two years ago.
“Mick McCarthy has always liked him. We wanted a left-sided midfielder and he gives the team great balance.
“He is a very good passer, both long and medium range and works very well in tight situations.
“He is great at dead ball situations and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him taking our free kicks and corners.
“We think he’ll be a tremendous addition to the squad.”
Jones has scored six goals in 32 League games for the Rams, missed a chunk of their ill-fated Premier League season through injury.

I see he missed a large part of last season through injury… Does that mean he is another SICKNOTE! 6 Goals from 32 games is not what I call a great return from midfield. Lets just hope he does the business. We need someone creative, strong a leader in Midfield as was Muke Bailey years ago. We also needs a lot more goals in the team otherwise it will be same as last season.. Lets hope SEB in not injured otherwise we will be really stuffed.

Great signing. He hardly played last season, due to injuries.
My only concern is, are we going to get rid of any of our transfer listed players? Edwards, if he is fit, I would keep but who is going to pay big money for Elliot, for example!

If you have a look at what the Derby fans think on Teamtalk on their your say page, the general opinon is that they wanted to keep him so for the money we paid for him i think hes a great signing. We haven’t had a good creative midfield since the days of Rae,Ince and Cameron and think he’ll complement Henry really well. Glad to see the back of one in six George when he gets sold.

Unless we sign Steve Howard or re-sign Kevin Kyle try to be positive about the signings!!! The 3 players we have signed are young & have some experience, so lets see them play for us before making judgements. Paul Jewell lost the plot in my opinion – who else would think Lauren Robert would help in a relegation battle!!!

This guy didn’t play much early last season. He actually made most of his appearances under Paul Jewell. My mate who is a Derby fan says he is quality but had a year of bad luck with injuries and niggles that affected his play but looked to be on his way back towards the end of the season (sounds like Kightly).
If he can show the form he has throughout most of his career then we have a great buy.
Echo everyone else over Berra, let’s hope we get him before anyone else does. If we do and they all gel we will have a back four of real quality.
It is starting to look like we will have a pretty good squad going into next season, particularly if Mark Davies can finally have a bit of good fortune!

Not bad 3 signings so far, think with Berra and another striker we would be set for an exciting season ahead. Actually getting really excited again now…..come on the wolves.
Think with the return from injury of Matt Murray, Mark Davies and Lewis Gobern they are 3 signings in them selves.
Add in the added extra competition now from Little, Jones and Elliot Bennett we shape up very well this year.

Good signing, worth the risk at £1m. If there was no risk he would be considerably more. It was touch and go weather MU let him go in the first place. Good touch and passer, maybe a bit lightweight but so is Fabregas and look at him!!!
As regards expectation, lets accept we have to go for it this season plain and simple. If we don’t make it who knows who will be staying at the end of it!!!! GO FOR IT WOLVES! GET THE COUPLE MORE IN WHO WILL MAKE IT THE MORE PROBABLE!

Yes I agree, they should be able to deal with it, but they obviously can’t. It’s a little hard for players like Keogh to give their best performance when whenever he makes a mistake he has ‘Freddy’ chanted at him.
But anyway, we don’t want to start a Freddy debate again!
We all have expectations, thats obvious. At Wolves though, we seem to expect too much, and thats part of the reason why we are where we are.

I would have much fancied Hoolahan from Blackpool plays a lot more games and we know from his performances last season he can do it in this division. I really want us to do well,i must i travel 90 miles to each game, but i don’t see anything to put us apart from 8 or 9 teams next season and i would now add Norwich into that equation. Less buys more quality i still think if we would have signed 2 quality central midfielders last year we had a good enough squad and i still do.

Just to clarify he lost his place in the team at the back end of the season they went up, please note did not play in play-offs was dropped!
He was poor when he played in Prem and yes did miss most because of injury but will not make or take tackles like Seyi does but you will see.
Now if we could get Howard that would be a signing

We must all wait and see but I agree with Spirite Wolves. Hoolihan at £250k would have been a far better investment and I worry about anybody being bought who a Championship rival is happy to let go!
Vokes and Stearman are to be strongly supported. This signing comes within the “wait to be convinced” category. Is he that much a better player than Potter that justifies a £1m price tag?

Nice to see some new young players getting signed instead of the old has-beens of old – however, some of you need to calm down – all of a sudden there is people on here implying one or two more signings and we are automatically going to win the league!!!! lets get real – if we were playing a team who had just signed Vokes, Stearman and Jones, would we be sitting there thinking we were going to get thrashed? I don’t think so.

i think wolves upper tiers got alot of stick from us fans last season – deservedly so in the main but surely we all have to agree – so far in close season they have done an excellent job and we have got the jump on these signing about some of the premier boys !!

My only worries are…
1, What was that injury last year?
2, Why are Derby (with a big parachute payement) letting him go.
Apart from that, Mick keeps um coming so the 3M’s are becoming masters… However I agree with 37 misterdj – lets not think we’re up until we actually play the first premiership game. There are a lot of very good sides and players take a while to settle and the chances of all our signings coming good is remote. lets keep it low ky but things are looking good.

Need at least 1 Centre Half and an experienced holding midfielder (Gravesen?), who can help this very young team, as well as add some muscle. Gravesen and Mark Davies playing centre midfield – mouth watering propsect …. but let’s wait and see

This signing may be a risk, but Moxey is shrewd and he knows that. The deal may be worth £1m, but I bet you it’s more like £500k up front and another £250k after apperances then £250k if we go up.

Hi derby fan here (In peace)this guy is a fantastic signing for you guys he was the back bone of our team when we won promotion. The only reason he didn’t play much last year was he had a number of niggeling injuries, if it wasn’t for that he would have got into our first team week in week out. he’s fast, strong and has a free kick like beckham. gve the guy a chance ad he’ll do wonders for you. but be warned get on this kids back and he’ll disapear. have a good season. 17 now we have a one in five goal scorer as opposed to a one in 6? Hmmm! We need a free from injury, creative powerful leader in midfield.
I hope this means DJ meets this criteria otherwise I’m doubtful about the outcome. Call me a cynic, but we need more goals in the team as a whole. If SEB is injured where are they going to come from? AK is putting a few away, with the emphasis on a few!

i think all 3 signings so far could be good for wolves.
jones i hope keeps fit and i notice that he can take a decent fre kick and corner.
vokes good prospect who i hope will improve and add some of the missing firepower to the wolves attack
stearman again seems a good solid dependable centre back and played well in a poor leicester team and gives us some pace in central defence too.
berra from hearts would be good buy, scotland under 21 and hearts captain. but he is playing in the worst hearts team in 20 years. hearts have a huge debt and have to sell players to reduce this.the problem here may be the owner who hides in lithuania and cannot get another manager who will let the owner pick the team and decide on transfers etc. this is the 4th year on the trot they have been in similar situation.

i like eastwood but he and all the other transfer listed players need to be moved out asap.
with these additions we could have a very good side and i hope we don’t have the same baffling team selections, tactics, decisions,formations, man management we had last season.
the league is going to be tougher i think next season but i would expect top 6 but who knows with luck and more goals why not promotion. only thing is i thought the same last summer.

In Derby’s promotion-winning season in 2006-07 he played a couple of League Cup games for ManUre and 30 League and Cup games for Derby. He had the most assists in the entire team and was the main reason for their promotion.
No need for sour grapes just because your lot can’t sign anybody even when they’re in the Prem.

So does this mean he’ll play on the left side of the centre or on the left wing? It might even be the first clue that MM is planning on a 352 next year, Elokobi, Stearman, Foley, with a midfield of Kites, Jarvis on the wing, Edwards/davis and Jones in the middle with Henry playing clean up guy protecting the back four. Would be a very attacking team and could be helped by the fact we dont have many CB’s. Would conceed quite alot but scare the hell out of alot of teams in this div meaning hopefully more times than not we’d out score the opposition

I think we should say, “Thanks”, to Steve Morgan for these three June signings. Is it within living memory the last time Wolves paid transfer fees for three players in June? In 1993 (fifteen years ago!) Geoff Thomas and David Kelly probably signed in June, but I don’t think Kevin Keen signed until July.
Last year I think Mick McCarthy expected to sign Danny Gabbidon, Gary Cahill, Liam Ridgewell, Michael Mancienne or some other young centre-back (that’s why he let Jody Craddock go on loan to Stoke), but Jez Moxey didn’t deliver. (The Stoke chief executive did deliver with Leon Cort and Ryan Shawcross.) This year Moxey is delivering, probably under pressure from Morgan.
So don’t always blame McCarthy! Anybody who wants to urge the sacking of McCarthy now is required to come up with a better alternative. I’m doubtful about Sam Allardyce–has he been the same man since he lost Phil Brown as his assistant? Now Brown is a Premiership manager and Big Sam is out of work. Last December, I hoped we could get Chris Coleman or Paul Ince, but now we can’t. If McCarthy’s sacked soon, we could jump out of the frying pan into the fire.
Ireland did much better under McCarthy than they’ve done since and Sunderland roared away with the Championship in 2004-05. McCarthy deserves a second chance! It’s no use hoping for some saviour to suddenly appear out of nowhere. Let’s get behind McCarthy and the team and try to get promotion this season!

To read all the happy-clappers kidding themselves that we are going up automatically next season is so sad.
Next season will be toughest Championship for years. We might scrape the play-offs, but that’s it! The other teams have proper managers, we only have Mad Mick, and he will loose it for us again. At least he is consistent!
