Gomes move frees up Robbo
Friday 27th June 2008, 11:26AM BST.
Villa target Paul Robinson is a step closer to leaving White Hart Lane today Spurs agreed a fee for PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes.
Tottenham will now discuss personal terms with the 27-year-old with the deal also subject to the player acquiring a work permit.
Gomes’ imminent arrival seems certain to spell an end to England international Robinson’s four-year stay in north London. Villa Park currently looks his most likely destination.
Talks are expected to take place by the end of the week between the two parties and, as exclusively revealed in the Express & Star last week, £5m rated Robinson, who is also interesting Middlesbrough, is known to be keen on a move to the Second City.
A source close to the player said: “Paul would welcome the opportunity to move to a club like Aston Villa.
“He believes Martin O’Neill can help to bring the best out of him. He realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely.
“He feels such a move would help to resurrect his career.”
His price tag looks decent value in the current climate given Liverpool’s £10m asking price for Scott Carson – an amount even the Reds stopper himself has hit out at.
In other news, Villa will meet FC Zurich in a friendly as part of a four-day training camp in Switzerland to step up their pre-season preparations.
The game will kick-off at 4pm at Zurich’s UTO Stadium for what looks likely to be Villa’s first fixture following their return to training on July 3.
It is the fourth friendly now pencilled in their pre-season diary. Martin O’Neill’s face Lincoln on July 15, Walsall on July 22 and Reading on August 22, on top of their Intertoto Cup two-legged ties on July 19/20 and 26.
Should Villa be successful in reaching the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Cup, it has been confirmed they will enter the Carling Cup at the third-round stage.
