Wolves young guns are here to stay

Tuesday 24th June 2008, 3:00PM BST.

Wolves chief executive Jez MoxeyJez Moxey insists Wolves’ ‘young and hungry’ recruitment strategy will remain in place this summer.

Wolves are edging ever closer to agreement with Derby midfielder David Jones and remain in the hunt for Hearts defender Christophe Berra.

Jones is 24 and Berra 23, the age bracket of the backbone of Wolves’ exciting young guns.

Michael Kightly, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Andy Keogh and George Elokobi are all 22, with Wayne Hennessey and David Edwards 21 and Kevin Foley 23.

After revealing today’s four-year contract extension for winger Kightly, Wolves chief executive Moxey added the policy of recruiting the best young talent available in their price range is here to stay.

He said: “We expect some new signings to do likewise in the very near future as we look to build a young, settled and exciting squad for the new season.

“Michael has been an outstanding player both on and off the field since he joined us from Grays Athletic.

“We are delighted he’s signed a new four-year contract, committing himself to Wolves for the long term.”

Kightly is delighted to have secured his long term future with Wolves.

“I wear the Wolves shirt with pride and will continue to do so.

“I can’t wait for the season to start. We’ve got a good, young squad and, with a couple of additions, I don’t see why we can’t have a successful season.

“The club is going in the right direction. Everyone concerned with it wants to be in the Premier League and I want to be there with them.”

It’s very much to be desired that Wolves young guns are here to stay. But that is a newspaper headline.

What Jez Moxey actually said was that Wolves’ ‘young and hungry’ recruitment strategy will remain in place this summer. Recruitment is not the same as keeping players.

As a recruitment policy, I’m not 100% happy with ‘young and hungry.’ There’s something to be said for acquiring one or two mature and experienced hands as well. (Not that I’m saying we should sign Dwight Yorke–I said “mature”, not “superannuated”!:-))

You could interpret Moxey’s remarks as saying we will not be acquiring any mature players.

I believe we must spend what is necessary to get a couple of top-class defenders, whether they’re young or mature–however much it takes. If we can do that without selling any of our young guns, that’s perfect!

I certainly hope the E&S is right, and that Wolves young guns are here to stay.

Why are people knocking Kightly for signing a new contract when I am sure he had the option of asking for a move and getting into a Premier League team.

I am sure he was on a low salary after us getting him from Grays (and after all the Moxey policy of young hungry players is all about getting players that are cheap). He has been brilliant for us and so if we are now paying him the going rate for the championship then surely he deserves that as he is one of the best players in the division.

Of course he will move on at the end of the year if we don’t go up, as will Hennessey and SEB, but I think we are lucky that these guys have stuck with us for another year when they could easily have made a mint by moving on.

The club is owned by Mr Morgan. He owns it outright. It is a company that was established to make a profit.

There is nothing immoral in making money from sports, it’s just like any other commodity.

In the USA the supporters don’t expect the owners to make a loss from the club. But we have a century of local wealthy patrons keeping the local club going.

In Wolves we had many generous patrons, the Ireland family were probably the most successful, giving Wolves some of its best years. The Haywards were not as succesful, but they lived in the Caribbean, and had to trust the CEO to manage the situation locally.

Mr Moxey has done a remarkable job at keeping the club going, producing profits from a Championship team that please the owners, and somehow keeping the fans coming back for more.

Mr Morgan is obviously pleased with the dividends his £10 investment are bringing him.

Young and hungry can be thought of as a euphemism for “cheap”, but it is all that Wolves supporters can expect from their profitable Championship team.

Just get used to the fact that Wolves is not a Premiership club any longer, and the present leadership have no intention of going down that financially risky route. To do so would destroy the current profitable business plan.

At least all that rubbish spin about buying new talent from European has been forotten. They must think we are idiots.

McCarthy has great connections in the lower regions of the football leagues. He has the capability to keep identifying and snapping up cheap bargain basement players. He has no European experience and no connections in Europe.

So, it looks like more “young and hungry”, and no chance of “experienced and talented”. Looks like another disappointing year ahead of us, yet again.

35 E11 “the current strategy is paying off” – “we have to be patient”

Did you actually watch the majority of games last season? Were they a) Exciting or b) Dire and not worth the admission money – for most games?

It just amazes us how many of you fall for this “spin” season after season

WHEN exactly is this “gonna” pay off? Next season, the season after that – Can you or Moxey or MM give us all a clue as to when we are “gonna” – “turn the corner”???

Or when it again fails are we gonna get the usual “well they put in a shift” and ” I couldnt ask anymore of the lads”

Nearly winning the lottery doesnt actually give you the top prize, it means exactly that – You did not win!

Expectations – Its the fans fault – Yet more garbage based on Moxey and MM “washing their hands of any blame” EVERY club in this country has expectations even in the lower leagues – does that mean that those fans are bad because they expect better???

Without at least 2 better centre halfs who have a reasonable amount of pace, a creative midfield player and a left sided winger – we can only expect much of the same next season

BUT most importantly of all – Wolves desperately need better tactics and strategies beyond the rubbish we saw last season (which was not just down to the players) as in most cases/ games MM and his coaching crew were beyond clueless and watching games (with the exception of one or two matches) had most of us cringing or yawning!

For whatever reasons Morgan has chosen to stick with Mick M – But unless there are MAJOR changes next season MM will revert back to type and we can all look forward to extra portions of tripe on the pitch and dour tripe in his after match summaries!

We desperately pray that MM gets inspiration from the God of Football and discovers “tactics” or hires a better football coach than TC

All you Moxey morons (to borrow Nippy’s expression) and Mick Morons believe that next season it will happen – Come on then if you really believe that – TEll us all – WHY and HOW?

Some of the comments on here really bewilder me.

Yes we are fans … yes we care … but unless you are in your dream job are you not going to try for a better deal.

Kights came from non-league and was probably one of the lowest paid players at the club. He got a new agent and new deal … good on him.
We are not going to get 11 steve bulls who are focussed on loyalty. Kights has done what is right for him and everyone else involved no doubt he could have got a bigger pay packet in the premier but he is sticking with wolves and trying to get back to the premiership with us around NOW GET BEHIND HIM!!!!

Its 4 years not 4 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And maybe if some of you could compare kightlys paypacket with the likes of Bentley and some of the championship journeymen you would realise

Maybe that is what has put Seyi-Georges nose out of joint i.e. Kights SEB and Hennessey (arguably our 3 best players) maybe getting more but that what you get when you are consistent seyi-george.

As far as Keogh goes im not his greatest fan, but you cant deny his workrate and effort (even though it is headless-chicken at times). Some of his touches and playmaking is top notch and i think he will improve, although i am no expert but if trappatoni sees something in him thats good enough for me. I would prefer him to set up 20 and score ten than just score 10.

Come on you wolves for 2008-2009 we can do it.

Don’t try to judge any of Mick’s strikers against *NORMAL* standards. In a McCarthy team the attackers are expected to put in a shift and defend as well.

This hopeless lack of intelligent tactics means that George, an attacking mid-fielder spent the whole season as a defending mid-fielder. He wants away, and Paul Ince rates him high enough to want to buy him! Who is the idiot here?
