Wolves greats back for bash
Monday 23rd June 2008, 10:00AM BST.
Wolverhampton Speedway’s 80th anniversary big bash will feature riders from the past, present and future.
Monmore Green is now officially the oldest track in British racing and the club are celebrating with a special meeting next Monday.
Riders in action include Mikael Max, George Stancl, Ronnie Correy and James Grieves – all members of the 1996 double-winning side.
Peter Karlsson and Adam Skornicki, who won the title with the club in 2002, have also accepted invites to race alongside stars of the future – Chris Kerr, Ty Proctor, Joe Haines and teenage golden boy Tai Woffinden.
Four teams have been named in honour of some of the most significant people to have played a part in the club’s glittering past – Sam Ermolenko, Ronnie Correy, Ole Olsen and Peter Adams.
Ermolenko and Correy will also join fellow club legends Graham Jones, Jan Staechmann and Wayne Carter in exhibition races.
Non-riding guests from the past include former world champion Ole Olsen, now the race director of the Grand Prix and World Cup series, fellow Danes Preben Eriksen, Peter Ravn and Finn Thomsen, plus golden oldies James Bond, Cyril Francis and Eric Irons.
Club owner Chris Van Straaten said: “It’s been amazing tracking down the riders from the past.
“Over 50 ex-Wolves will be in attendance as guests of the club. I would recommend supporters bring their cameras and autograph books, because it will be an emotional night.
“I feel certain we’ll see some fine speedway with Wolves riders from the past, present and future.
“The interest in the demonstration races between Ermolenko, Correy, Jones, Staechmann and Carter has been extremely high.
“They are all club legends, without a doubt.”
Season tickets are not valid for the event, which is sure to attract a bumper crowd, with admission prices set at £12 adults, £8 concessions, £2 children, while a special souvenir programme will be produced at £3.
