Man trapped in car smash
Wednesday 18th June 2008, 2:10PM BST.
This was the scene after a 4×4 landed on a car bonnet following a crash on a busy road near Wolverhampton.
The air ambulance landed in Bridgnorth Road, Wombourne, to rush a 22-year-old man trapped in the VW Golf to hospital.
The victim, from Dudley, was trapped for an hour before being released by firefighters after the smash with the Ford Maverick.
Police closed off a stretch of the road for around two hours after the accident last night.
A woman in the Golf and the Ford driver escaped unhurt but were taken to hospital for checks.
Anthony Marsh, chief executive of West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, who had just finished at a meeting in the area, rushed to help after seeing two ambulances drive past his unmarked medical car.
Ambulance spokesman Murray MacGregor said today: “The man remained trapped for more than an hour while ambulance staff worked with firefighters to free him.
“He had suffered a fractured left leg and had potentially serious internal injuries. He was airlifted to the trauma centre at Selly Oak Hospital.
“Considering where the Ford ended up, this could so easily have been a far more serious crash.”
