The 21-year-old father was killed in an accident at the Sita Recycling UK site on the Conegre Industrial Estate last Thursday.

The former Willingsworth High School pupil is believed to have been crushed in a large piece of machinery within the recycling plant as he tried to free a piece of cardboard that was blocking it.

Paramedics were unable to save him and Mr Bate, from Tipton, was confirmed dead at the scene. An inquest will open tomorrow in West Bromwich.

Workers on the industrial estate said Mr Bate had only been working at the plant for a short time.

They told how the accident had happened in the back yard behind high steel fencing.

An investigation is under way by the Health and Safety Executive into the full circumstances.
