Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Baggies confident over Phillips
Friday 13th June 2008, 12:29PM BST.
West Brom remain confident that they can strike a deal to keep Kevin Phillips at The Hawthorns, chairman Jeremy Peace said today.
Peace claimed there is ‘a willingness on both sides’ to agree a contract with Phillips for the Baggies’ return to the Premier League.
The chairman hinted that he remains uncertain about handing Phillips the two-year contract he wants.
But he hopes Albion’s new top-flight status will help convince the 34-year-old to stay.
“It is a work in progress,” said Peace. “Either Kevin will go with our blessing because we have had a very full negotiation, or Kevin will stay and everything will be fine.
“It’s a big world and Kevin can go if he wants to, but similarly he could stay and I think there is a willingness on both sides to progress it.
“I’m sure Kevin will get two years at quite a few places but I think Kevin is keen to play in the Premier League.
“He is very well respected here, he is popular in the dressing room, the fans like him and he is comfortable here.
“You’ve got to marry up that bit as well and see what we might be prepared to do.
“Let’s see what the answer is. I don’t think it will be too long in coming.”
Peace is keen to conclude negotiations with Philips and Martin Albrechtsen before pre-season training begins on July 3, and he hopes to wrap up discussions with Roman Bednar over an improved contract.
But he expects the pursuit of new faces to drag on beyond the start of July.
“We would like to get Kevin and Martin and any other contractual tidying up done before the players come back for pre-season,” he said.
“I have already started discussions with players who are out of contract next year or whose terms we think need improving because of contributions they made last season.
“That’s all ongoing and there is a lot of work going on to players in.
“I would suggest the market will start to move in July once players are back for pre-season.
“It will be hard down on the accelerator now trying to get these players.”

It could be the diference between going down and staying up we need to keep Philips. I know no this is his last contract so sign him up. If it wasn’t for his goals there would be no premiership football this season. So sort it out and let him score the goals to keep us up.

well you have just got to laugh, this could only happen at our club, why for once can’t we just sign a player up without any complications, for all the time we spend negotiating we end up losing the player(s) altogether,i read somewhere that Peace has made 12m available for transfers,of this 3.5m has gone on luke moore, surely this 12m is from the Davis deal, so therefore Peace has’nt released any funds at all,so with the estimated 60m we get for making the prem nothing is to be released, please someone tell me im wrong……….i envisage a long hard season ahead……..Boing Boing keeping my head above water the Peace way

I’m sure TM has put forward details of the areas he wants to strengthen and how so JP will have released funds accordingly. But he has to keep some back for wages, stand refurb etc and he won’t have the club going into debt. Wages for the Albion must be in excess of 20mil a year, if a player is on 10,000 a week that is 500,000 a year. I would think that most if not all the first team are in excess of that figure.
It’s a hard balancing act and you cant please everyone but whatever TM has to spend I’m sure he will get the right type of player

Tell me, is this the same guy who couldnt do it for the Villa and now 2 years older.
Let him go. He aint up to the level you have now achieved.

2; I don’t think it will be that good. I’m told one of the breweries has signed up your shirt deal. Banks’s five pinter.

Of course there are limited funds available, but nobody outside of the club knows ‘how limited’. Touting your funds about, simply inflates prices!
The majical £60m is not a direct payment to the club simply for promotion, this is what is ‘perceived’ to be the income rewarded for a season in the Premiership PLUS parachute payments made over a period of three years. The ‘percieved’ income is dependent on sponsorship, ticket sales, TV apperances and finish place in the league.
To think about spending that 60m now, would be like you or I borrowing from the bank until our numbers come up on the lottery! (and paying the intrest on such loan)
There really isnt much going on for the papers to fill their sports pages, if England were competing in Euro we wouldnt be seeing such trivial tittle tattle right now.
Give a little time, and the real activity will start to begin.
All that I’m saying, is give Peace a chance

As a supporter it is easy to keep calling for the chairman to dig deep into his pockets. Albion, however, are one of the best managed clubs in the FA, both on the pitch and in the board room. Peace has done a great job and needs to keep a hold on the purse-strings. At the same time he needs to give TM a real chance of keeping us up – it is a tight balancing act and i think Peace is getting it right – until if & when a big buyer arrives??

Yes ‘give peace a chance’

Well said 3,6 and 7. The chairman has got us this far let’s have a bit of trust in him rather than Baggie number 1 reading somewhere that JP has earmarked 12 million. Where was this somewhere? Surely if it was official it would be in the E&S and the Birmingham Mail. Better still, why not just splash out the 60 million and change our name to Leeds United.

I love comments like that one, “Give Peace a Chance”. Could make a good song title. To the worried Baggies and the sniping opposition fans, please read the article JP made for the B’ham Post this morning and then let the matter drop. Our boat’s afloat and sailing into a new dawn. Don’t rock it. Have faith.

4-when he was at villa, they were hovering above relegation, with nobody scoring, when he did play he looked their best striker to me.It may be tougher in the top flight, but he’s still in good shape, knows the players around him well, and is still one of the best finishers around. Not bad for an old man.

Anyone else missed the excitement of the Carling Cup draw? Am I turning into a big time Charlie?

Kev needs to be signed up. With him becoming a player/coach in the 2nd year. His finishing, experience & know how would be a vital asset to the club in the future. Can you imagine Sherjill & Ishmael with his scoring ability? That’s the youngsters coming through the academy. Sign him up JP!

Meant to say then there’s the youngsters coming through. (sorry 1st post)

2 baggieno1 – yes, you just have to laugh, but not at the club, rather at moaners like you. You mean like all the complications we had last summer when we signed about 13 new players in a few weeks. The cup’s always half empty for some people aint it mate! Go and play monopoly.

Or better still come and play for the Wulves and partner Eastwood up front. FREDDIE FREDDIE FREDDIE.

optimisticexplayer, who was Zolly talking too, the Wolves squad?

This is, I think a very sensible move. He said himself that it would impact on the new season if he let this drag on too long.
As regards to transfer money, as many have already said, the 60 mil, is a predicted amount which we haven’t got yet. There generally hasn’t been a lot of activity in the transfer market unless you’re Chelsea with 100 mil to spend.
All the dingles seemed to have talked about the last 2 closed seasons is Albion being a ‘sinking ship’.It sums up their fantastic brainpower by way of the fact that the Baggies have somehow FLOATED TO THE TOP.Er…Doh!
JP and TM give Kevin Phillips a 2 year contract for goodness sake.If anyone deserves a 2 year contract KP does considering the amount of goals he has scored over the last 2 seasons.
I do not understand what you are playing at, by being so stubborn,if you only play Kevin for half a game for 2 seasons, he will score more goals than previous players for example John Hartson etc. achieved throughout their time at WBA.
You need to sort this out before we lose KP the same way as we lost ZG and we end up back in the Championship.
One very loyal “but now getting peed off” Baggie since 1964. Up the Baggies
